"I got interested in Gene Rayburn during the 1990s, when I was a teenager and I discovered a marvelous cable channel called Game Show Network. I’d been a fan of game shows my entire life, and I was excited about seeing all these shows that I just vaguely remembered from my early childhood. My biggest surprise was how obsessed I became with a show I had never heard of until I got Game Show Network; a show that was cancelled the same year I was born, funnily enough. It was a show called Match Game.
Gene Rayburn, of course, was the host of Match Game, and I appreciated right away how different he was from other game show hosts. He was so hammy and mischievous and physical, and he fit the show he was hosting better than anybody I had ever seen hosting a game show. He and Match Game were absolutely made for each other.
I think the biggest discovery I made was the way Gene just got repeatedly sidetracked during his career. He came to New York to become a star in musical theater. When he couldn’t find work in musical theater, he wound up becoming a disc jockey. And after a decade of that, he decided to try being a television star. That didn’t work out right away, so he took a job announcing a new show. Well, that turned out to be The Tonight Show. His career, right up to the end, was filled with little detours. Gene always wound up doing something besides what he was really trying to do. John Lennon was right and Gene was the proof; life is what happens when you’re making other plans.
The biggest pitfall I encountered was the dearth of materials from earlier in Gene’s career. Because reruns weren’t a consideration for so long, a considerable chunk of the man’s work in television is just gone. Think about it—he’s best remembered for the 1970s version of Match Game, a job that he started when he was 55 years old. So finding resources from earlier than that could be surprisingly tricky, but that made it all the more exciting when I finally did see the occasional kinescope or hear an audio recording.
I think readers will enjoy #1, the memories, if they enjoy Match Game as much as I do, and #2, the surprises. Gene really had a remarkable career outside of that show. My hope for this book is that it makes that image on the TV screen a little more three-dimensional. Gene was very human, very flawed; he had his frustrations and disappointments like the rest of us."

Complex character, well-known but not known well at all.
By Matt Ottinger
If you are familiar with Gene Rayburn, chances are you know him as the host of Match Game, especially the ribald party version that aired for much of the 1970s. Now author Adam Nedeff, whose previous works include a similarly exhaustive biography of game show host Bill Cullen, presents a career in full, with plenty of surprises even to the most knowledgeable reader. Rayburn's pioneering work included radio (he was part of a NYC comedy team that redefined morning radio shows), late-night television (he was announcer and straight-man to Steve Allen on the original Tonight Show) and even the Broadway stage (he took over the lead role in Bye Bye Birdie when Dick Van Dyke left to star in his landmark sitcom). Along the way, there were smaller successes as well as the occasional failures, all of which are covered in a lively, entertaining style.
Nedeff expertly weaves his own thorough research with first-hand comments from Rayburn himself, compiled from late-in-life interviews and handwritten notes from a never-finished autobiography. The result is at the same time scholarly and deeply personal. Through rare interviews with Rayburn's daughter Lynne, Nedeff also provides a sometimes brutally honest picture of Rayburn's home life, which was frequently not as happy as the madcap, carefree image he presented on screen. Dozens of rare photographs, culled from the collection of game show archivist and Rayburn executor Fred Wostbrock, add to the intimacy.
This book is so much more than a credit list (though there is an amazing one in its index!). It is a loving but unflinching look at a fascinatingly complex character, someone who was well-known but yet not really known at all. Highly recommended.

FINALLY!
By Jed Bartlet
An in-depth, detailed look into the life of perhaps the most under-appreciated star in television history - the late great Gene Rayburn. Mr. Nedeff clearly did a tremendous amount of meticulous research, uncovering facts about Rayburn that caught me by surprise, and I used to think of myself as well-informed about all things Rayburn/Match Game. Funny, poignant, sometimes a little sad, The Matchless Gene Rayburn is highly recommended not just for Match Game fans, but for anyone who is curious about what it takes to make a television show a lasting phenomenon. If anyone thinks being a game show host is the easiest job in the world, this book will surely make you see things differently. It made me miss Gene and the whole Match Game gang that much more. There will never be anything like it again.

Very well written
By Nancy Maxwell
I love Match Game and Gene Rayburn. Gene had a very interesting life. I looked at the show and him differently when I finished the book. Sad that his childhood wasn't very good. When you have a wonderful show like the Match Game was, it was really stupid to move the show to another time slot, which seemed like the beginning of the end for it. I am so glad that Gene was able to do what he needed to do to make the show a success. If it would have been too serious it would have been boring. But Gene brought his wonderful humor and warmth to make it the best game show on at the time. I recommend this book to anyone that loved Gene and The Match Game.
