About the Author

Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is also the puzzlemaster on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday and is founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. He has edited countless books of crossword puzzles, Sudoku, KenKen, and all manner of brain-busters.

It's still a good set of 75 NY Times crosswords

What happened!? The description of this book is blatantly incorrect. It claims "Special commentary will appear along with each puzzle and give clever insight into the puzzle-solving world" but no text appears at all. It's just the usual format of a puzzle without commentary. The "special introduction" by Will Shortz is only 2 pages and is very general. The short 1-paragraph bios of each puzzle maker are also quite general, and unfortunately don't "add a new dimension" as the description claims.

It's still a good set of 75 NY Times crosswords, but I wouldn't have special ordered it if the description had told the truth.

Hoping for more

I thought there would be more information about the puzzle-creation process in general and maybe some puzzle history. The "who they are and how they do it" feature is limited to a total of two pages. Also, I prefer the portability of the 6" 9" format over the 8" x 10" size of this one. Otherwise, Will Shortz-edited puzzles always get five stars.

Sloppy production

As others have noted, the advertised "who they are and how they do it" in the title is misleading. There are thumbnail bios of the creators, which probably provide all you need to know about them, but there is absolutely no "how they do it," i.e. nothing in this book to assist people who are trying to make crossword puzzles or who would appreciate some insight into how they are constructed.

The book is not spiral bound, which makes it difficult to keep it open to the puzzle you are working on. The paper is cheap.

The date of the puzzle is provided, which is appreciated for clues that may reflect what were current events when the puzzle was drafted, e.g. "governor of Illinois." However, the day of the week is not given, and most people doing the NYT puzzle want to know if it is an easy Monday or big challenge Saturday. Sure, I could look up the day of the week, but who wants to do that for 100 puzzles?

The biggest disappointment is that the titles for the Sunday puzzles are not included. This really is a disservice. The title of the Sunday puzzle gives a clue as to the theme answers. Without the title, the puzzle is not complete. I'm sure the puzzlemakers did not appreciate this. Naming the Sunday puzzle is part of the creative process.

The Beatles in the News: 1962-1963

As a Beatles fan, I am always drawn to primary sources – so this book of news clippings, taken from various magazines and newspapers from 1962 – 1963 seemed irresistible. Compiled by an author, who first became a fan in 1963 at the age of seven, this is really just a personal collection of press cuttings. However, the author makes no suggestion this is anything more than something he wishes to share with fans and it certainly is not definitive, even though it is very enjoyable to read through. Mark Lewisohn has suggested the first time that the Beatles appeared in the press was when they were involved in a minor traffic accident during their tour of Scotland with Johnny Gentle, when their van crashed and hapless, then drummer, Tommy Moore, was taken to hospital – only to be dragged out of it some hours later by an irate John Lennon who expected him on stage.

So, what is included in this collection? It is a shame that so many of the clippings do not have the date or publication shown – although, from the dates shown on some of the papers, you can follow the timeline. The pieces begin with mention of Tony Sheridan and the Beatles making their debut on Polydor and are later followed by tiny ads for, “Love Me Do.” Sadly, “Love Me Do,” later received only a three star review in one paper, with “P.S. I Love You,” (the B-side) described as having a “poorish arrangement.” Yet, one newspaper later expresses surprise that they, “wrote their own hit,” (sending an ominous warning note to Tin Pan Alley) and there is some exaggeration with the quote, “they had several discs released on the Continent.”

As time goes on, the tours get bigger and so does success. By November of 1963, newspapers are reporting on stories of Beatlemania, sweeping the country, being shown on US television – while one lone letter from a British Beatlefan warns that the Beatles will be pushed into seclusion, “like Elvis,” if the mania goes on (as they later would, indeed, retreat to the studio). The press also reports not just on the Beatles, but Merseybeat, such as Cilla’s debut, and there are copies of tickets and flyers. However, one of the interesting thing about this collection, is that there are still links from the early days – including an interview with Cavern DJ, Bob Wooler, who sings their praises – calling them, among other things, “musically authoritative and physically magnetic,” and demonstrating that Beatlemania had been seen, in a smaller and more local form, for a long time before it hit nationally.

Although I really enjoyed this collection, there were some problems with the kindle edition. Firstly, I would have liked each clipping to have been dated, although I accept that may not have been possible. However, what was difficult was problems in reading all the text. You can zoom into the news clippings, thankfully, but still some of them are hard to read. If you zoom in on the smaller pieces, just a column or two, they are clear and I could read them. However, if you zoom in on some of the larger pieces – you lose some of the print and it is not always clear. Sadly, that marred my enjoyment of this collection slightly, which was a shame, as this is an interesting collection. However, having squinted my way through some of the longer articles, I found this interesting enough to know that I will certainly download further volumes and I am grateful that this fan made his collection available for us to read.

Great book! Would recommend to anyone serious about listening to good music with their existing equipment.

iHi-Fi Audio Setup Guide: Enjoy More Authentic Music From Any High-Fidelity Audio SystemI love my music. Always loved it. In fact, I think it's divine. I was very fortunate to have been able to start operating a turntable when I was five years old. I would carefully place the clay and vinyl records on my father's turntable and start playing the music at that tender age. Ever since that time, I knew the value of quality equipment and the good sound it made. The times changed, Cassette Recorders came along, then CD players, and DVD players came too. Walkmans gave way to iPods and iPads. Analog changed to Digital and to HD.

All the while I was listening to music and was thinking that it took expensive and brand new equipment to listen to good sounding music. Even the most expensive equipment I bought would play music with good quality for a while. It was seemingly like a plant with flowers in full bloom at first that would wilt away with time. Any equipment in my experience after a few month's use, deteriorated in its output of sound quality.

To keep listening to crisp and clear sounds, I had to replace my equipment, speakers, players or whatever it took from time to time. This was the norm that I always took for a given. Well, until last week, at least! I don't think that way anymore. I now think different. If I had a Porsche or a Jaguar (not going to happen in this life), but suppose I had one and if it were not tuned properly, it would not run properly. After reading this book, I understood that it is the same with audio hardware. Tuning your equipment is everything.

I was browsing for good musical equipment on the net when I stumbled on ihi-fi.com. There, the owner was giving away this book for free. I came to Amazon and purchased it (gratefully got it for a whopping $0) and read it over the weekend. Whatever assumptions I had until now about the relation between sound quality and age and cost of equipment lay shattered. There were so many good tips on how to increase the performance of the existing system that I could start realizing better music from my audio system already by just adjusting how the speakers etc. were placed.

That was not all. I am sold on the sage advice given here that I am going to try and find the right stuff for me to enhance the playing of music in my house. I am not a musician, but just a music lover. I would recommend this book to anyone who take their music seriously, and are looking for ways to enhance the performance of the hardware they already have without making a big hole in their purse.

I am thankful that I got this book for free during the promo, but would have gladly purchased it for the value there is in it. I am just passing the good Karma along. I hope someone finds this useful.

Yearning to Hear my Music as it Should Sound

For me it was a timely book. I know I have good music but it doesn't sound as good anymore. The author, Joseph Riden, gave me the insights and the tools to make my music all it can be. I've ordered some of the equipment he speaks about and shared the book with my computer guru who will do the actual installation. I look forward to hearing my music again for "the first time".

Excellent!

Writer/Filmmaker Paul Talbot's latest tome (it's 400+ pages! Greatly surpassing Talbot's previous Bronson book in length) is an amazing read. Aside from being a great anecdotal piece Talbot provides context to the individual movies presented by supplying development details, production notes, trade reviews, etc. Though it caters to the Bronson fan it doesn't shy away from Bronson's reticent, some might say rude, attitude towards employers, peers and even fans. Though he often played cold and unfeeling types on the screen he was a devoted family man who never quite understood what the fuss surrounding him was all about. In other words ...he was human; flawed, insecure and multi-layered. The book comes highly recommended. It makes a great stocking stuffer this holiday season provided you can find big enough socks.

Even Better than the first volume

I purchased the first Bronson's Loose book in 2011. As a long time Bronson and Death Wish fan, I've read it probably 5-10 times. It is a short, informative and entertaining read. Not only do you get all the behind the scenes stuff from participants like Director Michael Winner, but you get information on Cannon films and what it was like in the 1980s.

Needless to say, when I heard there was a second volume coming out, I knew I had to get it. I am a fan of Paul Talbot's writing style. It's almost as if he's invited you over to his house for dinner and a conversation. He truly knows his stuff when it comes to Bronson.

This book comes in at over 400 pages and is even better than the first volume. Over 30 new interviews cover everything from "Hard Times" to The Family of Cops films. Much like the first volume we get a full rounded picture of what it was like to work with Charles Bronson. A fascinating read.

Paul Talbot has done it….Again! The author has a way of writing his books to make you feel as if you are standing in the interviews and on set with the man himself. This book was not rushed and is a labor of love, from a fan for the fans. Paul exhaustively researched numerous sources and interviewed people that worked closely with the actor throughout the years.
This book can be read in two different ways – from start to finish, or skipping around chapters. Each chapter stands on its on. A reader can pick this book up and flip to any chapter and begin reading about the film they are interested in, without worrying about missing key pieces of information that may have been mentioned earlier, or later on.
In addition to this, each chapter had a similar structure and feel, which actually works extremely well. I knew every chapter would talk about the film pre, during and post production, theater release information, critical reviews, home video release information, special marketing item information (buttons, standees, promotional items), and then any additional information that happened around that time - such as the collapse of Cannon films, Jill’s battle with cancer, or other important information in that time period. With that being said, this formula does not take away from the book at all and not once did I feel bored. As someone that likes to reference information from time to time this makes it easier on me to know exactly where to look. You will end each chapter with the feeling you know just about everything there is to know about that specific movie.
Paul researched and contacted 35+ individuals that worked alongside Charlie. Each individual gave his or her feedback and insight on what it was like working with him throughout the years. Again, the book is written to make you feel you are in the interview and on set with them.
I purchased the hardback version when it was first announced in Q2/Q3 of 2015. The hardback quality is superb, with tight binding, sturdy covers and nice heavy pages. With 400+ pages, it is also manageable to read, not too heavy. It just felt good. I guarantee you this book will outlast your other books. There is NO dustcover, in case you were wondering.
My favorite chapters: Can “all of them” be an answer? If I had to choose: Hard Times, Cabo Blanco, 10 to Midnight, The Giggler Lives!, The Evil that Men Do, Murphy’s Law. I felt that each chapter is important and informative, but these are my personal favorites for numerous information and personal reasons.

Cons? None really. As an avid Bronson collector I would have loved a small summary list of items released for the films (Movie posters, variants, lobby cards, any promotional materials/goodies). I own a lot of memorabilia of Bronson films, so finding out about a few rare promotional materials in this book put me into memorabilia hunter overdrive.

Overall, if you are a Bronson fan, fan of film productions, or films shot in this this era – get this book – you will not be disappointed.

Excellent!

Doug Saye has written another great book that takes what can be intimidating and complex financial matters and explains them in a down to earth and enjoyable way. Each chapter covers a different concept in the world of investing and boils it down to is root concepts and explains it in a way that everyone can understand. He also does a great job of keeping the book entertaining by relating each chapter concept to a favorite movie of his.

This is an excellent book for anyone from a high school student just learning about the different aspects of investing to a an experienced investor looking for a quick refresher and enjoyable read.

The Best Woody Biography

As an admirer of Woody Allen’s short stories and films, I have read the previous three biographies and several books about him, including the most recent, Tom Shone’s “Woody Allen: A Retrospective."

David Evanier’s WOODY: THE BIOGRAPHY is the book I’d recommend to those who want to read just one book about Woody.
There are more than thirty published. Evanier's prose style is highly engaging. While making notes to prepare writing the review in a café near the UC Berkeley campus, I was asked by an acquaintance why I was reading it after what he did to Mia Farrow and Soon-Yi. She said this with a sustained frown. I put aside the notes and decided to read to her a section from Evanier’s book (pages 317-18):

“In 2014 Robert Weide, who directed a superb documentary on Allen in 2011, WOODY ALLEN: A DOCUMENTARY, listed the ten most common misconceptions about Allen and Soon-Yi in the ‘Daily Beast,’ followed by his responses: (The capitalization of Weide's responses is my doing because Amazon doesn't upload italics.)

‘1. Soon-Yi was Woody’s daughter.
FALSE.

‘ 2. Soon-Yi was Woody’s stepdaughter.
FALSE.

‘3. Soon-Yi was Woody and Mia’s adopted daughter.

An Absolute Must-Read For Anyone Interested In The Life & Career Of Woody Allen!!

A remarkable portrait of a remarkable man, carefully researched and filled with fascinating anecdotes from people who knew and worked with Allen from early childhood on. The author does an excellent job of clearing up frequent misconceptions and dispelling misinformation with solid facts, not speculation or gossip. Anyone remotely interested in this unique comedian, writer and filmmaker needs to get this book (and read it, of course).

Stupid errors.

Way too many stupid errors. In the 3rd or 4th chapters, it is mentioned that Woody boxed a Giraffe on TV. A simple Youtube search or a glimpse at the documentary made a few year ago will show it was a Kangaroo. On page 268. It stats: "Chaplin said that he loved Allen and particularly admired Broadway Danny Rose." Wow! A man who died in 1977 liked a movie that came out in 1984. I looked in the back of the book thinking that maybe he was referring to another person by the name of Chaplin but, no it said Chaplin, Charles. There is also a error on page 276. about one of the caricatures in "Crimes and Misdemeanors" who commits suicide by "hurled himself down a flight of stairs to his death and left no suicide note."
On page 279: "He disliked the kind of joking suicide note, something like'I went out the window.' Which is the line quoted in the movie. This event happens towards the end of the movie and is memorable because of it's quirkiness. There are a few more that I spotted, but I feel I got my point acrossed. I don't expect a book like this to be error free when it comes to minor details, but I do feel that the errors made in this book were just lazy. Extra: as I was looking in the back of this book I happened to glance at the details of "Sweet and Lowdown" For cast member is says: "Sean Penn, Uma Thurman." What!! No mention of Samantha Morton who had a bigger part in the movie then Uma. Why no mention? Like I said lazy!

Love this series

I'm working my way through these books, and always look forward to a new one. They are great for the intermediate crossworder or for when I don't want to think too much. Some are easy, some harder, some just fun. I like that the pages are perforated to tear out so that it is easier to do the puzzles on the left side in the first half, and the puzzles on the right side in the second half. I just wish there were fewer "quote" puzzles.

This is the 10th such book in the series I have purchased. I am a dedicated "Cruciverbalist" (Crossword nut) and this series, Edited by John Samson and published by Simon and Schuster, is my favorite. Challenging and fun!! Not for the beginner and not for the crossword snob who thinks the ONLY challenge comes from the NY Times Sunday puzzle. I'll be ordering #16 as soon as I finish the 300 puzzles in #15. This is an excellent read! Mr Chernov was an early pioneer and promoter of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts concert scene with stories that come alive with history and humor. As I read the book, I felt like I was there living the situations as they happened and I was captivated by his insight, charm and storytelling of an era where anything was possible. Highly Recommended.

Took me down memory lane

This book was a trip down memory lane for me. It fleshed out some of my hazy memories of the past. Because I worked for Skip during much of the period from the Warehouse to the concert promotions, I know a lot of the back story. I may not have enjoyed it as much otherwise. I think this would have been interesting included in a broader biography of his life.

Lincoln managed, in the midst of overwhelming matters of state, to see the actor's Falstaff on several occasions and to engage with him in discussions of how Shakespeare’s plays should be performed, a topic on which he had decided views. Hackett's productions were only a few of those Lincoln enjoyed as president, and Anderegg documents his larger theater-going experience, recreating the Shakespearean performances of Edwin Booth, Charlotte Cushman, Edwin Forrest, and others, as Lincoln saw them.

People with an interest in the life of Abraham Lincoln are aware that as an adult he enjoyed both attending the theater and reading the plays of William Shakespeare. This is the ideal book for the reader who wishes to explore this connection further.

Professor Anderegg writes knowledgeably and well. His book not only covers the historical record related to Mr. Lincoln's direct reading of the great Englishman's works, but also the Shakespearean actors and theater of the early to mid-19th century America.The book is strengthened by useful end-notes and a comprehensive bibliography.

I especially enjoyed the epilogue. It references the many appropriate quotes mined from Shakespeare and used by saddened contemporaries in the aftermath of the assassination at Ford's Theatre.

An insightful view of Lincoln and the role of Shakespeare in 19th Century America

I enjoyed this book by Michael Anderegg. The author presents a broad and detailed view of the role of Shakespeare in Lincoln's life, and in doing also presents an interesting picture of the cultural life of 19th century America. This was the time when many American small towns had lyceums where speeches and cultural programs were available to the intellectually minded. It was a time when famous Shakespearean actors traveled alone to small town theaters to join with local casts in staging plays that the audience often had seen before and yet chose to see again. Anderegg tells how the boy Lincoln read and memorized Shakespearean quotes as part of the standard reading available in the grammar schools of the era, and how Lincoln built upon and continued this familiarity throughout his life. I thought the particular plays and passages that Lincoln loved said a great deal about his mental and psychological makeup as he struggled with the burden of the Civil War. For example, Lincoln was fond of the soliloquy spoken by Hamlet's uncle, King Claudius, "Oh, my offense is rank it smells to heaven; It hath the primal eldest curse upon't, A brother's murder." As with other passages Lincoln loved, much in them seems related to Lincoln's remorse at having to prosecute the war. Among the many interesting details that the author conveys in this book is that Lincoln loved Shakespeare so much that he often read passages to his personal secretary, John Hay, or to his guests, and that Lincoln was so aware of the original script of plays that he was disturbed when scenes or passages were omitted or changed in plays he attended. In presenting and describing such details with obvious love and regard for both Lincoln and Shakespeare, Anderegg has made a fine contribution to our understanding of American culture at a time when America was divided by war and had only expanded half way across the frontier with exposure to culture something that had to be actively sought.
