Eyes Wide Open: True Tales Of A Wishbone Ash Warrior, by Andy Powell

In 1969, Andy Powell was one of four founding members of progressive rock pioneers Wishbone Ash. Forty-five years later, with no sabbaticals, he is still a member of Wishbone Ash. And he has seen a lot of interesting things along the way. Watching the birth of rock'n'roll in the 50s; stepping into the swinging 60s mod scene as a teenager; breaking through to the big time and touring the States with The Who; selling hundreds of thousands of copies of Argus; being managed by industry legend Miles Copeland; outliving punk and moving to America; battling former bandmates over the right to use the name Wishbone Ash, and fighting to keep that name alive through decades of changing tastes and styles--Andy Powell has been there, done it, and seen it all. And he's still doing it today.

Last Man Standing is not just the story of one man's adventures in music but also a journey through some of the most thrilling years of rock history. Honest, unpretentious, and often wryly amusing, it draws on half a century of mingling with the great and the good--not to mention the occasional nutcase. It's a book that will appeal strongly to fans of Wishbone Ash but also to anybody with even a passing interest in classic rock of the 70s and beyond.

In the interest of full disclosure I will state at the outset I am a friend of the author and major fan of the band Wishbone Ash:

Unlike the linear approach to many bios written by other famous rock personalities, I really enjoyed the "detours" and asides the writers took in presenting the history of one of rock music's most important guitar bands. The writing is intelligent, informative and at times, humourous. It retains a very human quality which could have easily been otherwise, when one considers these are the recollections of someone at the height of rock stardom- travelling the world over, sold out shows, TV appearances, epic parties and industry accolades.

The band's history is certainly covered but the real insight is given through Andy Powell's honest and straightforward tales that come from years of journal entries and contributions from those who were there. The chapters cover varied topics as well- hotels, the fans and the never-ending pursuit to deliver the musical good night after night, year after year, for over 45 years.

The most intense accounts cover the lawsuits AP endured to protect and retain the rights to the band's name and trademark. As the "last man standing", a founding member who had never left the band, he was forced into a lengthy and costly legal battle in the UK courts with former bandmates, who saw an opportunity to reclaim a brand name that would have languished in the dust bin of history years ago. If not for Powell's endless drive to keep the band's legacy alive through constantly performing around the world and creating new music all the while, this surely would have happened. In the end, he stands alone as the leading force behind one of rock's most important yet under-appreciated bands.

All true WA fans will undoubtedly know many of the stories compiled here but there are many never before retold anecdotes that will surely entertain and surprise many. This is a must-read for the real WA fans in the world and for those not very familiar, it will provide a view into the late 60s and 70s golden age of rock music from a unique perspective- told by someone who lived through it and continues to find the music as vital today and it was decades ago. You will enjoy the ride!

As rock bios go it is an excellent read and recommended to any fans of the band
By Richard Moore
As rock bios go it is an excellent read and recommended to any fans of the band. As others have commented not just a linear story - the diversions into specific aspects gives the content more depth.

Interesting insight into both the economics of the music biz / band biz and the dynamics of people working so closely (if I can put it like that). Some amusing insights into the fun, excesses, excitement and yet boredom and mundanity of life as a working musician especially at the "thinner" end of the fame spectrum where artists have to reconnect with their audience and keep them upto date with touring schedules - which is the main source of income for most musicians now.

Respect is due to AP for keeping the flame burning and using the web (like many other bands) to connect with their audience. Robin Trower (fellow 70's stadium rocker) does the same. If you want to know how to keep a band on the road (literally) this would be a good primer

Needless to say the legal stuff is also interesting if only for what is not said as much as is said. No surprise there but it's not all swept under the carpet - you find out who the protagonists are and what happens. Some will say history is written by the victors and I guess this is true but if you want to find out how like the rest of us rock stars are - just read this book :-)

Had never realised that WA connected with quite so many bands and music biz figures I was aware of in the 70's either.

So - a good read and well recommended

Must Read For Wishbone Ash Fans
By Steven Sly
Wow, I loved this book! I came a bit late to the Wishbone Ash camp and really did not even discover them until the “Bona Fide” album came out in the early 2000’s. In 2003 I was helping to run a small progressive rock festival in North Carolina called ProgDay and we booked Wishbone Ash for the show. To be honest, although I had heard of them, I was not very familiar with their stuff at all. Andy and the boys came to our humble little festival and totally kicked ass after spending the night flying from Houston overnight to North Carolina. I became a fan and they could not have been nicer more humble down to earth guys. It is still a highlight of my years involved with the festival. I soon lapped up all of the Wishbone Ash music I could find, and although I like some albums better than others I think the majority of their entire catalogue is really good. I had not heard anything about the book until a friend of mine sent me a blurb about it on Facebook. I purchased the kindle edition and just finished it last night. I have read a lot of rock n roll memoirs over the years and this ranks right up with the best of them. Andy’s writing style is very pleasant and along with the straight chronology he also adds a lot of interesting side stories that really add to the book. Of course the legal proceedings against Martin Turner and other former band members are fleshed out here, and you only get Andy’s side of it, but it is interesting stuff for sure. I have always considered Andy’s version of the band to be the true Wishbone Ash and I am glad that he came out on top when it was all said and done. Another thing I like about this book is that he brings the story right up to present day. It seems like many memoirs of this nature focus just on the years that the band / artist had big success and pretty much ignore everything else. Andy goes through all of the albums, tours, and band members up to present day which I found refreshing. I guess the bottom line, is if you are a Wishbone Ash fan or a fan of rock memoirs in general I think you would enjoy this book.
