"HOLA! "HOLA! It is thoroughly 'user friendly' in content, organization and presentation, making it especially useful for parents who are home schooling their children, as well as an ideal language studies elementary school classroom curriculum text. Very highly recommended for school and community library Spanish Language Studies instructional reference collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "HOLA! CHILDREN'S BOOKWATCH, MAY 2016Midwest Book Review May 12, 2016"Hola! Let's Learn Spanish" is a fun introduction to the joy of learning to speak a new language, with the assistance of Pete the Pilot and Panchito, a Mexican jumping bean. Pete the Pilot greets children with his plane and explains his job is to fly kids around the world to visit new places and make new friends. Today, Pete is taking his plane to Mexico to visit a sunny bean field. Pete starts with a list of simple expressions in English and Spanish and the children are off. What follows is a lovely story about a wandering jumping bean, written in English but embedded with expressions in Spanish, which are printed in bold. Comic, colored illustrations bedazzle the tale, and in the end the children participate in a birthday party or fiesta with a pinata full of caramelos to be broken and shared. What happens when the pinata is finally broken is a surprise for all (Que sorpresa!). The story of the jumping bean in the pinata ends with some added ideas for increasing Spanish fluency. In "Te toca a ti (It's Your Turn), kids are encouraged to act out a skit with friends, with lost of Spanish vocabulary in a treasure hunt, at the supermarket, and the Expresion diaria, list of daily expressions. A section titled Rincon cultural, or Culture Corner teaches about varieties of frijoles, counting in Spanish, pinatas, and inspires with a song, la cancion, about breaking the pinata, Dale, Dale, Dale. Next a chapter project of making a mask (una mascara) decorated with beans extends the exciting journey to Mexico. Finally a list of Palabras, or vocabulary words in Spanish and English lists the words that were introduced in the book, organized by chapter. "Hola! Let's Learn Spanish" is a creative, appealing invitation to explore the world of fiestas, frijoles, and caramelos awaiting travelers to Mexico.
From the Author
¡HOLA!.. is a start in learning the language. My hope is that parents and children will be enthusiastic about learning Spanish and will ask their elementary schools to implement programs for learning languages. Currently, only 15% of elementary schools here in the U.S.offer any form of foreign language instruction. Please see that your child continues the study of Spanish. If your local elementary school doesn't offer FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School), please ask your Board of Education to implement a program so that your child and others can enjoy the benefits of learning another language. It takes many years to master a language, which expresses all the complexities of human thought. Your child will have a truly useful skill with amazing benefits after studying the language throughout grade school and college.

Rich in Spanish Exposure w/ Free Online Audio Stream
By Maura Ann Rubies
This children's paperback sends you on a flight with Pete the Pilot as he takes his magic plane to Mexico. It opens with a fun story about Panchito--a Mexican jumping bean. You follow him on a brief adventure from his field, through market, to fiesta. Along the way, you meet people and experience new things while learning beginning Spanish words and phrases.
The drawings are simple yet colorful with a few color photographs included. The font is nice and large, with the story being bigger in size than the rest of the book. It's all very comfortable on the eyes, especially since EVERY Spanish word appears in bold.
One of my favorite aspects of the book, is that you can easily stream the audio version for free online at the website (provided in blue on the back of the title page). The author Judy Martialay narrates (with native speaker, Maria Fernanda Pardo who says the Spanish words/phrases). It's a must-have for learning the pronunciations. Play this for bedtime, bath time and/or mealtime to get as much exposure to the language as possible.
"UNA MASCARA/A Mask" is a craft project project with templates for making both male and female masks to decorate with beans. I love that there are photographs of completed samples. This inspires children to want to make one (or more) of their very own. You could then use these (or simple puppets made of popsicle sticks or paper bags...) to act out the characters as you reread the book. Note: An actual skit (Where is Panchito?) is located in the following chapter.
"TE TOCA A TI: It's Your Turn" is a chapter that provides activities to enable you to work with the Spanish words/phrases found in the story while adding many more into the "mix." You'll practice introductions, choose responses, identify items, place nouns in locations, hunt for specific people/things listed in Spanish, perform a skit and study expressions...
In "RINCON CULTURAL/Culture Corner," you learn some aspects of Spanish culture, including practices that inspired this story, like a song that is sung when trying to break a piñata and the mystery behind what a "jumping bean" actually is!
At the end of the book, you'll find "PALABRAS/Words" containing all the Spanish words organized by which section they were first introduced.
This is an excellent book that demands a sequel--you can't help but learn some Spanish from this rich experience.

Learn Spanish through Story & Repetition
By Conny
“Let’s learn more about Mexican children. Let’s begin by learning their language, Spanish,” Pete the Pilot explains at the beginning of Judy Martialay’s children’s book, HOLA! Let’s Learn Spanish: Visit New Places and Make New Friends.
~ What ~
This thirty-six-page paperback targets children ages six to ten years old and their parents who want to learn Spanish. With no scary scenes, the tale contains some complicated wording for beginner readers. Colorful but sophomoric illustrations are on most pages. A website with a downloadable audio for correct word pronunciation is available.
This book teaching about Mexico and its culture, people, and language provides a story as well as educational tools. When Pete the Pilot flies the readers to the country, they meet Panchito, a Mexican jumping bean which is in a bean field, taken to market, sold in a store, and placed in a piñata to be found by friends.
The rest of the book covers practicing Spanish words, learning about people and things Panchito saw, making a mask out of beans, reiterating words in the language, and ending with acknowledgments. The readers get to converse, answer questions, have a treasure hunt, show daily expressions, read details about several objects, and sing a song.
~ Why ~
I like that this book promotes learning through a story, following it up with reiteration, repetitiveness, and practice. Having all Spanish words in a bold font makes them easy to locate.
~ Why Not ~
Due to the long paragraphs on the pages, it would best be read out loud to some children as it may frustrate some readers. Beginner readers may struggle with some of the three-syllable words. Some may find the book either too hard or simple to understand regarding Spanish words.
~ Who ~
A retired teacher of elementary, middle, and high school, Martialay was born in New York. No information is available on the illustrator, so it is assumed it is the author.
~ Wish ~
I wish it had more detailed illustrations throughout the book, such as having the jumping bean stand out so young ones could search for it quickly on every page. I do not know if Page 19 was left blank intentionally.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a beginner book on learning Spanish from an English perspective, this may be a good choice. This would make a good start to a series on languages and cultures around the world.
Thanks to Bookpleasures and the author for this book to read and review.

Basic Spanish
By Coral Russell
This book comes in paperback and Kindle version with a website to play the audio for the entire book. I read and reviewed this book on a Kindle Fire.
Basic Spanish. If you've never heard a word of Spanish in your life than this book could be a basic introduction. It is recommended for grades 1-5. I would say a Kindergarten class could also use this book and up to an adult just starting to learn a couple of words in Spanish as a super easy introduction. The book was easy to read and follow. The audio on the website worked well and was quick to find and play. As a former language teacher myself and Spanish speaker there is nothing wrong with the Spanish. The book did a good job of focusing in on a couple of areas and basic vocabulary built around a story. It's hard picking words since they are different from Spanish used in not only different Spanish speaking countries but also within a country. This book did a good job of using the words in an inclusive lesson with activities.
The book is short. The biggest detractor for me is that the audio was not broken down into chapters. Even though minute markers were given there was no way to get to that particular point so you would basically have to listen to the audio from beginning to end every time. It would be necessary, especially for beginners to replay certain parts. This means you'd need a native speaker to use this book to get the pronunciation right.
There just isn't much there. Though it would be a well-rounded, individual lesson I could only see this being used to see if someone would be interested in learning Spanish. Like a trial, this is what it sounds like and if you like it, jump into other material with a better foundation for learning a language.
The Spanish narrator was fine and the illustrations were simple and clear.
