Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School

I picked up Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School this morning. My oldest daughter is in the third grade, and she loves this series. She is going to claim this book as soon as she gets home from school, so I took some time to read it before then.

There is a lot going on in this book. The pet pig (from the last book) seems to have more privileges than Greg, Grandpa moves in with the Heffleys, Rodrick gets a job at the ice cream parlor, and a good chunk of the book is devoted to Greg’s weeklong school trip to an old fashioned farm.

As with the other books in the series, the book appears to have been written on notebook paper. The font looks like a child’s handwriting, and the book is filled with funny stick figure illustrations. This is definitely part of what makes the Wimpy Kid books such a fun series. My oldest daughter loves to read and her fluency is advanced, but she is reluctant to read “novels” because she doesn’t like that they don’t have pictures. Books like these are wonderful for children like my daughter, as well as reluctant readers.

Of course, the biggest draw to this book- and the series as a whole- is the humor. Sometimes the series gets a bad rap because the humor tends to be a little immature, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not funny. I found myself smiling as I read through this book, and Greg’s vision of the future- telling a drone that he didn’t want mayonnaise on his burger- had me laughing out loud. And Greg is downright insightful when he says that older people’s recollections of the “good old days” are not always as accurate as they think.

I would recommend Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School. This is an immensely popular series. Greg Heffley is ultimately a good kid. He doesn’t always make the right decisions, but there is usually a consequence as a result. Greg’s flaws are what make him easy to relate to, and to empathize with. After all, making mistakes is part of growing up. Greg might be stuck in middle school forever, but that just means that we can continue to appreciate his experiences during those awkward years between childhood and adolescence.

Fun Time with No Electronic Devices (Except Dad's Webcam)

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: OLD SCHOOL is book number 10 in this popular series (see the entire list at the end of this reivew.) If this is your first forray into the imaginative world of Jeff Kinney, you are in for a treat. The creator of these loony books continues his insightful wit, accompanied by cutting edge (if not exactly award-winning) artwork. I've noted before that the artwork reminds me a little of a Gary Larson cartoon mixed up with some "Dilbert" cartoons from Scott Adams.

If you remember where we left Greg Heffley the last time we saw him, the Heffley's vacation has taken a bad turn, complete with birds flying inside their car. In this installment, mom has decided that it's time to get rid of all electronic devices. Being a good social activist, Mom's getting the town to sign a petition. After all, she assumes, things were so much better back in the old days. To prove it, the whole family must now relive those days, bereft of all modern electronics and conveniences. Of course, this requires Gregory to visit an old-fashioned, rustic camp, complete with non-working toilets. He and his gang of ner-do-well campers make an ill-fated raid on the girl's cabin to get some deodorant, with poor results. Dad is called in to be an "emergency chaperone." Later, his buddies have to tear-down their cabin and use it for firewood.

With her "Back to the Good Ole Days" kick, Mom is a bit of a hypocrite, however. She uses a "Pet Tracker" app to keep track of the disobedient Gregory, who ends up running from a wild gang of Girl Scouts. It turns out that Dad has also installed a "Web Cam" in the house to watch Gregory's (and Grandpa's) misdeeds.

**HELP ME FIGURE OUT THIS ARTWORK**
On page 2, in the illustration of Gregory in the bathtub, thinking of days of old, there are a bunch of neighbors gathered at the window, looking in. I can't figure out what that container below the window is. Is that an ICE CHEST? If you know, please post a comment.

Minor Nit: In the Kindle edition that I purchased, the formatting works just fine. The illustrations all presented correctly, as did the text formatting, columns, etc. The only gripe I have is that the Table of Contents in the Kindle version is very skimpy--the TOC just lists page numbers; I could not navigate to different chapters.

All in all, DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: OLD SCHOOL is a hilarious, fun read. Those "Good ole days" weren't really so great after all, were they? The artwork, in conjunction with the text, is really excellent, and adds a lot to the story. Perhaps my favorite illustration is on page 109, of the "PET TRACKER" that mom uses to find her son.

This is a great little resource book for fun 'material'. The authors contributions to joke telling style and technique also makes you think. Of coarse there are different kinds of humor, delivery, and talents! Not everyone will laugh at the same thing. I read several of these to my wife and we couldn't stop laughing. Some made us laugh out loud and some we laughed quietly inside. All of it was amusing.

I frequently speak to business groups in my profession. The idea in this book about how telling jokes is like talking to a group is right on. I’m practicing for a presentation I have to give to a board this week and I’m using the exercises in this book. And my kids are reading jokes to each other. We’ve had fun with this book.

En 1935, il part pour le Brésil comme professeur de sociologie à l'Université de São Paulo. Au cours des années qui vont suivre, il va étudier les tribus indiennes de l'Amazonie. C'est le récit de ses voyages à l'intérieur de ces sociétés dites primitives qu'il racontera, en 1955, dans le livre qui l'a rendu célèbre, Tristes Tropiques (Terre Humaine). Il est aujourd'hui reconnu comme un penseur fondamental du XXe siècle. Claude Lévi-Strauss est décédé le 1er novembre 2009.

Into the remote parts of South America

I like to travel and to observe the cities, landscapes, the plants and animals and the human inhabitants of the countries I go to. So does Levy-Strauss, and he is a fantastic observer, much more sharp-eyed than I could ever hope to be, and a highly entertaining writer. In this classic he talks about a wide range of observations from a number of corners of the world, but mainly about South America.
The book deals with Levi-Strauss' time as a teacher in Brazil and his trips into the South American hinterland; his escape from Nazi-occupied France; His later expeditions to visit remote tribes in the Amazon; and an assortment of observations about such diverse topics as the frustration of the traveler to never encounter the true, pristine state of a culture, the Indian caste system and the division of public and private space in different parts of the world. The book is full of fascinating anecdotes: My favorite one is how a native chief from observing Levy-Strauss grasped the social importance of writing, but not its role in information storage and transmission. He bluffed to impress his underlings and drew freshly invented line configurations on a paper. This leads Levy-Strauss to observe that from the invention of writing to its universal knowledge a few millennia passed, during which it did not serve to liberate the masses, but to control them. Such wide-ranging philosophical associations are frequent and were very enjoyable to me. The book is, however, definitely not only a collection of anecdotes, but in parts a very detailed description of the life of some of the native tribes he visited in the Amazon. Drawings of artifacts, patterns used in body-painting and photographs supplement the text. We are given both anthropological descriptions of the lifes of these peoples, their social organization, attitudes and material culture, as well as Levy-Strauss' personal experiences when living among them, sometimes his friendships with members of these tribes. Of course these people were strongly affected by the contact with European civilization, often to the worse. We also learn about these developments. There isn't really much direct explanation about his theoretical approaches to anthropology. This is the kind of book which made me wish that I could have been an expedition member of Levy-Strauss' team. Highly recommended.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

My 7 year old son had received a gift card to Amazon and eagerly shopped the site for something Dragon City. He looked at several books, and chose this one. For 2 days, he waited patiently for his package to arrive, even bragging to his friends that the book was coming. When it did arrive, the book was 26 pages long. Many of the pages contain an enormous screen capture along with a single sentence. Towards the end of the book, it is slightly more detailed. Approximately 4 of the 26 pages tell the user how to download the app from the ios store or Google Play. This is not useful information.
My 7-year old is now upset with his purchase.

N. Datin McDonald is the daughter of Richard C. Datin Jr.,The Star Trek Enterprise Model Maker. She spent her childhood in Malibu CA. Has a B.A. from U.C.L.A. and many years of experience as a floral designer and owner in Solvang, CA. She is currently a photographer of animals and landscapes, and resides with her husband and Chairman Mao, the cat boss, in the Pacific North West.

Meet the *Real* builder of the U.S.S. Enterprise..!

Just finished reading "The Enterprise NCC-1701 and the Model Maker" by N. Datin McDonald. This short but extremely interesting book accomplishes the much needed task of filling in some gaps in the history of what is perhaps the most iconic spaceship ever created for American science fiction media.

As an artist and scale modeler myself, I greatly appreciated the clear technical treatment and information on how model maker Richard C. Datin constructed the original three-foot and the later eleven-foot shooting miniatures of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Alas, there are few photos of the time and the paper trail surrounding this project is thin -- but as the author points out, her father was a working modeler and at the time building these spacecraft was "just another job," as no one back then could ever guess as to just how popular Star Trek would become. As the original miniature undergoes some much needed restoration at the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum in preparation for its new unveiling in 2016 (Star Trek's 50th anniversary year), I felt very privileged to experience this book's nostalgic glimpse back on it's creation.

The volume also relates stories about some of the other TV and movie modeling projects Mr. Datin was involved in, culminating in later life with his interest in the collection and restoration of steam locomotive railroad engines and cars as the founding curator of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.

I won't spoil it by telling you what it is, but at the books' end, readers are treated to a simple little photograph of the head-stone for Mr. Datin's final resting place and it is sure to spark a little thrill for every Star Trek fan. My posthumous thanks go out to Mr. Datin, who sounded like a wonderful man and a creative artist who gave us all an enduring legacy that has helped so many of our dreams take flight among the stars -- and also thanks to his daughter for taking the time and effort to compile this short but meaningful chronicle of her father's skill and talent.

Beam me up Richard!!!

Written mostly in Richard Datin's own words, gleaned from his many correspondences with primary sources and interested parties, it was left to his daughter to excerpt, edit and put it all together many years later! That the documentation isn't complete and the story doesn't flow as well as we might wish, can all be attributed to the oft quoted phrase of "hindsight being 20/20". Certainly at the time the key parts of this story played out, there was no notion that this would be anything other than "just another job"! That the author has managed to sort through the documents and material holdings of her father's three separate working lives, and give us this much of a glimpse, showing the industry practices and institutional ineptness of that era onto our own, is truly an impressive feat, and much welcomed. I would have wished for much more development of his years founding and collecting for the Nevada State Railroad Museum, covering what I consider to be his vastly more important work of preserving the history of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, along with its orphaned step-child, the Carson & Colorado Railroad, both children of the fabulous Comstock Bonanza's of the mid to late Nineteenth Century. Perhaps I may hope for a sequel to this text covering that later, and more seminal career, in far great depth. For now, this volume of the life of a truly interesting man will have to suffice, and Trekkie's everywhere should rejoice.

Fascinating first-person account of the creation of the U.S.S. Enterprise

A delightful memoir from Richard Datin's daughter about the mysterious work that he was doing in the family garage and his workshop, when called upon to turn Matt Jefferies' design for a spaceship into the graceful U.S.S. Enterprise. This inexpensive and interesting book traces Datin's history with the project from his first work on a wood model shown to Gene Roddenberry in 1964 to the remodeling done on the 11-foot version of the ship when the new STAR TREK series was green-lighted as a series. This breezy history fills in the blanks in the oft-told creation story for the famous spaceship, and it follows the elder Datin and his fascination of steam-powered locomotives and the railroad museum that he left as a legacy.

About the Author

Sonia E. Sultan is Professor of Biology and Professor of Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University, where her research group studies plant ecological development. She has long been a major contributor to the empirical and conceptual literatures on individual plasticity and its relation to ecological breadth and adaptive evolution. Sultan studied History and Philosophy of Science at Princeton University, followed by graduate work in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. She was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of California (Davis) Center for Population Biology, and a Fellow of the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin).
