A very insightful autobiography!

A very insightful autobiography from one of the music communities most elusive, yet talented members. Founding member of Joy Division & New Order gives a wonderful first-hand account of his early days as a child growing up in Salford, England during its darker days, to a single mother suffering from CP and confined to a wheelchair. I honestly had no idea of the depressed state of his childhood until reading this book. There is a lot of somber reading material throughout the first quarter of the book, but it certainly gives the reader a deeper appreciation of Bernard. Sumner, as well as other artists who perhaps have gone through similar situations during their childhood. Naturally there is a lot written about the Joy Division years and this section is certainly not without its share of sadness, what with singer Ian Curtis' depression and bouts of epileptic seizures. It's never pleasent to read things such as this, but the friendship and support that Bernard gave Curtis during his life is very uplifting. The chapters on the transition between Joy Division and New Order are very interesting, as are the chapters written about their time in the studio and Bernard's discovery of the various electronic studio equipment that New Order had employed during the recording of their albums. His perspective on the Hacienda is entertaining and of course he touches on the issues surrounding New Order and former bassist Peter Hook. There's no trash talking---it's actually very "high road" and Sumner makes his stance on the matter quite effectively. Very entertaining if you like New Order or even Joy Division, but still a great read for the casual fan looking for something new to read.

the Peter Hook book about Joy Division was incredibly detailed

This was well-written and had a manageable length. With such a long span of time to cover, he does breeze through a lot of time periods and just cherry picks random events to elaborate on. By comparison, the Peter Hook book about Joy Division was incredibly detailed, although not as eloquently written as this one.

Overall I enjoyed it and learned a lot about New Order, Joy Division, and Mr. Sumner.

Wonderful Read

If you like New Order, Electronic, and Barney, you will love this book. When I read it, I got insight into Barney's personality after feeling he was inscrutable for many years. Great inner content expressed well enough for me to feel the transference of his person energy. I was sad when I finished the book. Just wish he had written more about Electronic. Having read Hooky's books, I'll say this: Hooky's an entertaining and funny writer, but definitely an embellisher, and, I suspect, a liar. Barney's book, while not as funny (as Hooky's) felt pure, positive, and true. I felt like I was getting more of what I get when I listen to him sing and play. Highly recommended.

This quick little read will surely get you in the holiday spirit with fun retellings of a Christmas past. I was really laughing out loud at how sneaky Todd (as young boy(, is trying to track down his gifts and their hiding places. I know each and every one of you reading this has tried to figure out where your parents hid your gifts. He really brings to life the excitement of growing up and becoming a grown up in a neighborhood full of kids your own age. My favorite part of the story is how his mother made a football referee outfit for him because that is what he wanted to be and his parents encourage it. As a mother, that really hit home because you always want your children to be exactly what makes them happy, no matter what.

Team Reddie all the way!

Miss M. picks up where she left off in the first book. Right into the thick of things and the drama! I loved the first book and so as soon s I had finished reading it, I snagged this one up. I read the whole series within a day. It was hard not to get your feelings caught up in the lives of Eddie and Red.

Gwyn has spent the last few years of her life trying to find a balance of peace and existence. The fighting has become her outlet and her way to hide some of the pain she lives with. She’s been successful in that for a long time. Or so she thought! When Eddie enters her life, everything she’s ever known in her adult life is thrown into the air and spun around. Her immense and deep attraction to Eddie is so new, she’s not sure of what to do. She has to take it one moment at a time and in the process can she help them both?

Eddie has lived by his rules for a very long time. He has figured his life out to be pretty decent he feels like. He’s built his career up pretty well and he knows that he doesn’t need anyone in his life to complicate things. Because when you let someone in, you let in the potential for pain. That’s something that he’s known his entire life. It’s the reason why he has these rules. But now there is Red and she’s climbed over the wall he’s put up and smashed his rules to pieces. What can he do now? What does he do with this love he has for her? Is it really love?

In order for them to move forward, they have, to be honest and open with each other. This means that Eddie has to share his past with her. He’s kept it hidden for so long that it’s hard to let anyone else truly hear it. He doesn’t want her pity he has had that enough. What he wants is to throw it out there and move past it. He feels like he can have a chance at really finding love. He has to learn to let go and let her fight with him for their love. Their intensity, passion, dedication, love, faith in each other and the peace they seek is a powerful mix to hold together. Is it possible to do all this and then some?

Creative adoration (positives): Miss M. doesn’t hesitate in unfolding the drama even more! They’re both powerful characters on their own and together they are a power couple! I have so much respect and appreciation for the way their pasts were told. As someone who has survived similar situations, it grabbed my emotions and I felt a connection to Eddie. He’s a kid who had to grow up in a hellish situation and as a man lives with those demons. In this book, Eddie was my favorite. The fact that he has found some healing makes it even better. With the healing through his ink, his friend, his work, and now Red, he changes into being a more likable person. Yup, he has his butthead moments where he’s an aggressive jerk. But it’s easier to understand him.

Creative indifference (negatives): The only thing that I would say is a negative of sorts is the lack of warning of the content in the blurb. I feel like it’s always a good thing to have some warning. However, it didn’t take away from the story.

Creative appraisal (overall): Overall​ I felt like it added yet a few more layers of an epic journey Team Reddie (Red and Eddie, get it?) has to travel on to get to a better place. Their ups and downs are crazy at times but in a way that keeps you interested and looking for more. This was a one sitting read for me! Again Miss M snagged up my emotions and ran with them. The whole series is fascinating and it’s an awesome series to lose yourself in.

I am so happy to finally got to read this second installment to this series.. Fight part 2 picks up right where Fight part 1 leaves off..
I could not put this book down. It is a very fast passed read.
In fight part 2 we get to learn more about Eddie and his past as well as the answers to what happen to Red's father the night of graduation. Feelings are discovered and admitted. Jase (Red's best friend) is out to cause trouble. However these two have a powerful connection to each other.

I recommend reading this series. M. Dauphin delivers a wonderful tale of two very emotionally broken people finding themselves in each other.
I can not wait for the final instalment in this series..

Love and War

This series does need to be read in order for complete understanding. If you have not read book 1 this review will be a spoiler. In book one we meet Red and Tex who fall in love even though they are both fighting it. Red is an MMA fighter with a bad past and Tex hates fights due to violence in his childhood. This story is packed with action and romance. I enjoy the characters and the dynamics they have with one another. The story line reminds me of another book the flip being the female being the fighter. However it's been a great read so far.As with book one we end on a cliff hanger.

A collection of very basic DevOps recipes

Some years ago, James Turnbull wrote an interesting blog post about what is DevOps. That was 2010. We still don't have a real definition of what is a DevOps, but we are all excited about it. Many IT companies are investing a lot of resources trying to build DevOps teams and promoting that culture. This hype obviously results in lots of pages and books dedicated to it, as well as tools and practices. DevOps Automation Cookbook is one of the latest titles covering the subject. It presents the reader with recipes to solve common problems a DevOps face daily.

Spanning through 12 chapters, DevOps Automation Cookbook, as the title suggests, belongs to the cookbook series and, as such, follows the winning problem-solution approach: the author introduces a typical problem that a professional faces and then shows how to solve it. This means that the reader is not force to get from cover to cover, linearly; he can freely jump through the recipes without risking missing some necessary information. The book is well written and properly proofread. The short introduction of each chapter is pleasant and easy to follow.

But let's dive into the contents. One of the things that came to my mind once I've reached the back cover is that the chapters could be roughly divided into tho clusters: those that try to cover a whole huge technology (Git, Docker), and those that instead focus of small applications (APTly). Those that belong to the first group have lots of titles dedicated to them, and more often than not, a book is not even able to give full coverage of that technology.

Now, I don't have anything against this. But the author definitely tries to cover way too much terrain, ending up covering nothing. Yes, because those chapters dedicated to Git, indeed, teach nothing more than installing it, creating a repository and pushing/pulling through it. Any DevOps already knows that and is probably more interested in more advanced features, such as pruning the repository off huge files that were committed by mistake. Something similar happens with Docker or Jenkins: the reader is taught how to create a Dockerfile and running a container or installing the Git pluging into Jenkins. I am quite sure a DevOps is more interested in setting up hooks to automatically trigger a build when a branch is merged into the master, instead.

On the other hand, the recipe covering APTly, for example, really gets to the point and shows the professional how to set it up and get it to work. Job done.

I am disappointed with this book. The author has tried to cover way too much and the recipes presented are of little use to a professional.

Comprehensive guide to system management automation with excellent examples to help you get started with DevOps

If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to key automation techniques in modern system administration or just want to learn more basic tools and principles in DevOps world this is the book for you. It starts with the basics, but quickly runs through the basic principles of infrastructure automation via different tools like Ansible and Docker. The book also explains in detail how to monitor and deploy servers or applications to production in a controlled and automated way.

I did especially like the chapters Metric collection with InfluxDB and Log Management as logs and metrics are too often simply collected but then ignored, but this book makes them feel like a natural part of the deployment and management process.

Once you master the tools and ideas presented in the book it is quite an eye opener to the possibilities of DevOps and especially Infrastructure as a Code.

DevOps is a dynamic technique to develop and manage complex infrastructure projects more fast. This book introduces the topic, the techniques and some tools. Like the other cookbooks, this will give you the recipes to start using the tools on your projects, but like the author said this is a different cookbook, this book is much more dynamic and require much more tools and for each tool, you need different techniques, so for each kind of project you may need some tools to take advantage of the DevOps techniques. If you work with Agile or DevOps or want to implement in your next project, this book is for you start the right way, this tools give you a more structured project management and development point of view, the team could be more engaged and the process more clear. The book has a good structure and the author know what most of your projects need.

Handy, though number of species covered is limited

This would appear to be a useful guide with the essentials and some bonus features like how to identify leafless trees in winter, but it includes a small number of species, 127, in the West, though generally the most common ones. Compare its coverage with the much more comprehensive Trees of Western North America (by Spellenberg et al), with 630 species---about five times the number. Descriptions in the DeMarco book are generally fuller than in Spellenberg, and its compactness is an advantage on a hike. I own both books, and there is always an advantage in looking up a tree in several books for more accurate identification. The Spellenberg includes introduced trees like eucalyptus and tree-of-heaven that have found their way into the natural landscape.

Excellent book for professionals and laymen.

As an environmental educator in the Eastern part of Pennsylvania, I wish we had this exact kind of book for our trees here. Identifying Trees of the West is professionally done but in layman's terms. The format is nicely organized and the pictures are clear and large enough to be able to distinguish the differences between the trees. This book makes me want to head "out West" and start identifying trees. The book is small enough to fit in a backpack, you shouldn't go hiking out West without this book! Thank you Lois DeMarco and Jay Mengel

A Must Have Guide

Yes indeed there are plenty of western tree field guides, but this is a "must have" whether amateur naturalist, professional "ologist", or simply someone curious about what they are seeing and wondering why it exists where it does. I worked professionally with Lois for four years and her work and commitment to helping people understand the environment around them was a trait not all of us possesses. Her partner and husband Jay Mengel is also a wonderful person sharing a passion for interpreting and conserving our natural environment. This field guide combines a lot of approaches often found in several but separate guides all in one very well done and illustrated guide. The species accounts, leaf identification guide, and winter identification all framed in the "importance of place" is masterful.
