The story of how L.A. diverted the Owens River more than 90 years ago—draining a lake and leaving behind a toxic dust bowl—is one that English professor Piper (Cartographic Fictions) takes personally. She grew up breathing wind-borne arsenic-laced dust lifted from Owens Lake; her lungs are permanently scarred and her sinuses damaged. It's thus disappointing that this history of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's corrupt grab for Owens Valley water, and the coverup of the consequent environmental disaster, doesn't pack more of a punch. In a scenario familiar to anyone who saw Polanski's film Chinatown, Piper lays out facts cogently enough: the capitalist villainy that enriched the young city's white elite nearly a century ago, when work started on the L.A. Aqueduct; the devastating impact of the water's diversion on both Paiute tribes and local farmers; and how the project led to "white flight" from neighborhoods around the Los Angeles River, which was dwindling to a polluted trickle in a trench. Unfortunately, the damning accumulation of accusations, though well documented, is lost in a prose style as opaque as the horrific dust storms the author describes. B&w photos. (Aug.)

Owens Lake was drained in the 1920s to provide L.A. with water, and the attendant dirty dealings over water rights and land speculation produced a notorious chapter in the history of the West. But there's more to the story. Once briny Owens Lake went dry, the region's cyclonic winds began whipping up immense clouds of fine white dust. Toxic with arsenic, nickel, selenium, and cadmium, this penetrating grit causes serious lung and autoimmune diseases. Piper grew up breathing the deadly dust, and she and her family are suffering the grave consequences. Accordingly, Piper spent years researching the crimes associated with Owens Lake. The result is a gripping chronicle of epic greed, wanton corruption, overt racism, and unbridled environmental irresponsibility. Piper strips away the camouflage that has long concealed the tragic fate of the Paiute Indians, the killer dust's inundation of a Japanese American internment camp, and the impossibility of meeting the growing water demands of California's desert megalopolis. Lost in the dust

The author addresses an important issue in the book. In addition to the dust problems cited, there certainly is a problem in the Aral Sea and to some degree even the Dead Sea. This will be an increasing problem of "who gets the water?"

While I am in sympathy with the author's concerns, I was very disappointed in the lack of fact checking. There is very great concern for dust in the PM-10 range and even PM-2.5. There is a problem of "farmer's lung" in certain areas of California due to PM-10 and PM-2.5. The term PM-10, however, is improperly defined on page 3 and again on page 138-139. EPA NEVER defined the size of a particle in micrograms! The proper designation is micrometers or microns. I would guess that this is a good reason to have a reviewer who is knowledgeable in the area fact check.

Additionally, the Hitchcock movie is Sabotage not Saboteur and takes place in Great Britain not Los Angeles.

Another compelling reason not to breathe in L.A.

Piper (English/Univ. of Missouri) grew up 50 miles from Owens Lake, Calif., "currently the worst source of dust pollution in the nation." The lake, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, had ample water until the 1920s, when Los Angeles began to divert it to serve metropolitan needs 200 miles away, the subject of Roman Polanski's classic film Chinatown. Piper examines how that film's makers denatured it for fear of the city's omnipotent utility department, which could not have found a more suitable source of water, politically speaking, since most of the residents of the Owens Lake area were poor Paiute Indians, who were easily displaced and powerless. The parched conditions unveiled fine dust particles that defy dust masks and grout, causing nightmarish autoimmune illnesses, asthma and other woes that are epidemic around the lake, affecting Anglos, Mexicans and Paiutes alike, to say nothing of the Japanese Americans interned during WWII at nearby Manzanar, locally famous as a place where "reduced visibility due to the dust led to the deaths of dozens of people in car crashes" and even prevented the military from tracking missiles fired during tests in the Mojave Desert. Challenged to undo some of the environmental damage it had wrought, L.A.'s Department of Water and Power proposed that Owens Lake be declared a "national 'sacrifice area' in order to overrule public trust law." DWP was unsuccessful, so that parts of the lake are slowly being rehabilitated even as a similar disaster looms at the Salton Sea, closer still to the crowded metropolis. Throughout, Piper writes with prickly, if controlled, anger, much in the kindred spirit of Mark Davis's City of Quartz, which bookends this neatly. The tone is fitting.

Readers who admire Davis's work and that of the late Marc Reisner will find this fine entry in the library of apocalyptic Californiana of urgent interest.

There is a great deal to admire in this book, particularly the ambition, the theoretical approach, and her broad general knowledge of the subject. But as one reviewer has already pointed out, there are a number of sometimes glaring errors in the research, errors that are, I suspect, only noticeable to specialists in the field. Nonetheless, in a book that addresses a general audience, the responsibility for accuracy is even more important, since those readers are the ones most likely to accept the errors as facts. The prose also seemed to leave a bit to be desired, as if some of that dust had settled on the keyboard.

About the Author

Robert (Bob) Emmert is a retired aerospace engineer. Bob has been working Sudoku puzzles for five years, and has developed some solution techniques, given in this book, that should be helpful to “Sudoku Warriors”.

Bob graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1953 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. After graduation Bob attended The Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology (ORSORT) for one year to study Nuclear Engineering. He was then employed by the General Electric Co. on the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion project and developed the reactor control systems for experimental reactors. Bob began his aerospace career with North American Aviation in 1961. He attended Ohio State University and received a MS in Electrical Engineering in 1964. He was the manager of Advanced Development Engineering for the Missile Division of Rockwell International and his technical expertise was “Tactical Missile Guidance and Control”. Bob (with another engineer) holds a patent on a strap down, guidance system for a tactical missile.

Scott Gandert is the author of several books, most recently, “Searching for Brakemen” (Indiana: IUniverse, 2015). He holds an MBA with an emphasis in International Healthcare, an MA in Counseling Psychology, and a BA in English. He is a former teacher, former waiter, former landscaper, former counselor, former CB radio salesman, former small business owner, former private investigator, and full-time husband and father to 4 indoor cats. He is a Sudoku enthusiast and enjoys working the most difficult puzzles he can find

The Sudoku Warriors' Samurai

This book provides a very clear and methodical approach to solving Sudoku puzzles. Whether you are just starting out or you are a honed Sudoko Warrior, you will benefit from this book. These guys know their stuff. What a great example of what can be created over long coffee sessions at a Star Bucks on Saturday mornings by a rocket scientist and a poet. I am glad these guys connected and you will be too.

Lauren Kessler is an award-winning author and immersion reporter. She is the author of seven nonfiction books, including Counterclockwise: My Year of Hypnosis, Hormones, Dark Chocolate, and Other Adventures in the World of Anti-aging, as well as My Teenage Werewolf: A Mother, a Daughter, a Journey Through the Thicket of Adolescence. Her journalism has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles Times Magazine, O, the Oprah Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Day, Prevention, and Salon. She also directs the graduate program in narrative journalism at the University of Oregon.

Hooray for Adult Dancers

Just as I was about to hang up my ballet slippers at seventy-one years of age. I read about Lauren's book in People Magazine. To me Raising the Barre, is the best D.I.Y. book for aging dancers ever written. Yes I enjoyed all the history, but mostly I enjoyed all the exercise tips to prepare a dancer for the overwhelming demands of class and rehearsals. I especially enjoyed the detailed explanation of the dancers belt. They never explained it in quite that way at my beginning ballet class. I started ballet at age sixty-seven. This is my third season dancing in the Nutcracker. My thanks to Lauren for giving voice to the challenges all Adult Class dancers face in an art dominated by fabulously fit twenty year olds.

I loved this book- the writing was accessible and funny

I loved this book- the writing was accessible and funny, the voice felt intimate and open, and the story was relatable and moving. I literally couldn't put it down and finally finished it in a four hour fevered nighttime read. The story is Lauren Kessler's own personal narrative but while reading it I couldn't help thinking about my own "ballet dream"- a dream or passion that I let go of as a kid because I thought I wasn't enough (or I just wasn't) and those moments where Kessler looks back it felt like...a lot of things at once: personal, painful, darkly and pointedly funny. I can also say that I laughed out loud (like, really) four times. There's also a boatload of history about the Nutcracker and ballet in general that was really interesting. But this book really isn't just for people who love ballet or even know anything about it - it's about doing something new, shaking up your life and letting go of some of that junk you started believing when you hit puberty. Loved it, loved it.

Among many books in the market I have found that this book introduce the arabic letters for kids in such an easy, attractive and organized way. The book uses numerous activities to present the different cases of the arabic letters which is usually a challenge for kids to comprehend, however the activitesmakes it vey easy for them to grasp. The colored version is so eye catchy and the black and white gives kids hours of painting while learning. I love the book and highly recommend it .

My 5 year old loves this book. Many fun exercises. He loves mazes and color-by-letter most. The first time he got the book he solved 10+ pages without help! I like the large page size of the book, good for coloring. Overall, a great book for learning arabic letters.

Enjoyable read to gain perspective

Karen Kingsbury's novel Divine is a modern-day retelling of Mary Magdalene's story and the contemporary demons she faces. She recounts her past of physical and sexual abuse, drug addiction and suicidal thoughts at an abuse shelter she runs.

The book is well written, except for a few parts where the story slowed or seemed redundant. However, the character development was excellent and completely realistic. The choices that characters make in light of their pained histories are believable, although traumatic.

The majority of the story is Mary telling her past to a woman who has left her abusive husband. Mary's history is darkly traumatizing and leads her down a dangerous path in life where only Christ could rescue her. However, Mary relives her past in order that another woman will be saved.

All of the characters involved in the book have gone through stressful patches of life. Kingsbury's characters are easy to connect with and the relationships developed between the various characters accurately show the ups and downs of living a life of abuse and a life lived in darkness.

Overall, the book was excellent. It is an inspiration for Christians to go out and minister to those who have led lives like Mary's. Mid-teens and older, especially women, would receive the most enjoyment from the book, in particular those who have suffered through abuse or those who know someone who is currently dealing with issues of abuse. However, it also just an enjoyable read to gain perspective through another person's eyes. - Molly Schnepel, Christian Book Previews.com

Truly Touching!

Divine by Karen Kingsbury is a truly touching novel about a woman whose terrifying abuse leads to a life of ministry. This book details how one life can alter the lives of many and Mary Madison's life does just that. Her life not only touches the other characters in the book, it also touches the reader. I found myself having to put the book down a number of times just so I could grab the tissue.

Spiritually, I found this book to be quite uplifting at this time in my life. It was refreshing to read about a person redeemed by Christ who didn't live the perfect life and who wants to reach others that have been damaged by sin. I get so tired of perfect characters, with perfect lives, who have nothing better to do than sit in judgment of everyone else. It was nice to read about a person who has sinned, who has been saved, and is out to do as Christ has called them to do ... not out of a sense of self-righteousness, but out of true love. The kind of love Christ has for us.

This is the third book that I have reviewed that is considered to be Christian fiction. I am finding that I really like this genre. Karen Kingsbury does an excellent job of reaching out to her readers through the lives of the characters she so beautifully creates. Divine, published by Tyndale House Publishers, really is Life-Changing Fiction. If you know someone who has been abused or is being abused, I would highly recommend giving them this book. Five stars!

In the DC area at one of her women's shelter, Mary Madison is briefed by her receptionist Leah Hamilton that her newest resident Emma Randall looks suicidal and ready to bolt. Battered and with no hope, the twenty-three year old Emma considers herself unworthy and ready to flee now that her two young children are safe from their abusive father Charlie. However, Leah softly gets Emma to meet with the legendary Mary while four years old Kami and two years old Kaitlyn play with dolls.

Mary shocks the frightened Emma by asking if she should like to hear her story not just the media account. Hesitantly Emma agrees so Mary explains how Jesus loved her and saved her. She was a little girl when her hooker mother took them to stay with her maternal Grandma Peggy who gives the little girl a purse with scripture inside. However, her mother immediately removed them back to the streets. When she scores a three day job with out of town Johns, her mom leaves Mary with her pimp; the last time they saw one another. From that moment Mary battled the seven demons that lead to sin and helplessness until she meets a believer who introduces her to Jesus.

This is a terrific modernization of Mary Magdalene living in Washington DC and using her story to encourage other people especially women that hope lies with Jesus. Mary's tale is told in flashbacks, which enhances how far she has come. Karen Kingsbury provides a deep character study of how one woman with help overcame seven contemporary demons (drugs, prostitution, etc.), but also makes no apologies that the author believes the path is with Jesus; readers who want a clear split between state and religion may find the religious message overbearing, but everyone will agree that Ms. Kingsbury provides an entreating parable starring a modernized Magdalene.
