He has a lot of experience in a large variety of technologies, ranging from backend technologies, such as Java and Scala, to frontend development using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. Besides working with these technologies, Jos also regularly speaks at conferences and likes to write about new and interesting technologies on his blog. He also likes to experiment with new technologies and see how they can best be used to create beautiful data visualizations, the results of which you can see on his blog at http://www.smartjava.org/. Jos currently works as a Scala engineer for a large Dutch financial institution and has just given up a position as an enterprise architect for Malmberg, a large Dutch publisher of educational material. You won't finish this book and then come away feeling like you can write an idiomatic Scala RESTful API in ...

I waffled back and forth between 2 and 3 stars because I wasn't sure if, perhaps, my expectations just weren't in line with what the book claims to be. The truth is, the book gives an overview of the most popular RESTful frameworks out there for Scala right now, and I was looking for something a bit more in depth.

But, I'm going with 2 stars because even if what you want is an overview of the popular frameworks out there right now, this book gives you only the briefest of introductions. You won't finish this book and then come away feeling like you can write an idiomatic Scala RESTful API in any of these frameworks afterward. You won't even come close.

If you have literally never worked with REST concepts before, this book does touch on what those concepts actually mean, but even then I just can't recommend it.

Had the author gone into more detail on each framework and expanded the book to include pulling all of the concepts together in a larger, non-trivial example application it'd be great As is, look elsewhere, imho.

Clear, informative, and the perfect primer

Harper Mitchell clearly draws on years of experience as an actor and editor to write this clear and succinct guide to producing a demo reel. As a video production professional I have seen far too many aspiring actors shoot themselves in the foot by failing to present their talent in a gripping and professionally organized way. As Harper states from the beginning the actor is their own company and their reel is a key component of their brand. Failure to make that brand impactful and relevant to a client (agent or producer) means no sale...not something an actor, especially new in their career, can afford. This is a short read packed with useful information explained clearly and with examples to help it stick. The chapter summation points are especially helpful for review or to find a specific segment again. If you need a reel or have to make a reel this should be your first stop to get educated!

Good but...

[[VIDEOID:89fa93bd9aa5fb706158206bcabd8845]]I just feel that Pixar artbooks are getting less fun to read. Maybe perhaps it's because there isn't anything in this book to read except for foreword by John Lasseter and director Peter Sohn.

First up, I've to say that I enjoy the artworks, the sketches, character designs, lighting studies, scene paintings and environment art. Enjoyed them more than I did for the Inside Out artbook. Sharon Calahan's lighting studies are terrific and eye catching, definitely the highlight for me in this book. The approach to the character design I feel, at least for Arlo and Spot, is quite close to comic characters you see in newspaper comic strips. Other dinosaurs have more detail.

My lack of enthusiasm for this book has got to do with the new way of presenting the artworks without any commentary, use of more than necessary white space and have simple sketches blown up huge. It started with The Art of Inside Out and now with The Art of Good Dinosaur.

Commentary provides more depth to the artworks, and not including them makes the book feel slightly hollow. When the drawings are interesting and you want understand the context behind them, there is nothing to read. The use of unnecessary white space does not help. They could have used better page layout to add significantly more artworks, at least to make up for the lack of commentary. While it's a pleasure to look at artworks that are printed huge, of which many in the book satisfyingly so, it would be better to enlarge detailed paintings rather than artworks without much detail. That would have given more impact to pieces that deserves more attention.

I like the artworks but this new presentation style is just not working for me and I'm a Pixar fan. I don't like the hollow feeling I get after going through the book.

It's a difficult book to rate. Maybe 3.5 out of 5 stars.

mostly because it's probably gonna be one of Pixar's most beautiful movies in terms of environment design

So excited about this movie, mostly because it's probably gonna be one of Pixar's most beautiful movies in terms of environment design. Cars gave you a stunning view of west coast along route 66. And good dino is set based on landscape along Rocky mountains in Wyoming and Idaho.

Lots of lighting studies from Sharon Calahan!!!

"The art of the good dinosaur" is amazing!

The good dinosaur is one of the most beautiful films that I have seen, and this book is just like the movie. It is very neat because they lay the art in order from the movie. You will feel like you're watching the movie again. The art pieces are so photo-realistic that it will blow your mind. They have everything from drawings, character designs, colorscript, concept art, etc. I have used it for several days now and I can't stop looking at it. If you like Pixar and The good dinosaur, you are going to love this book. I highly recommend it!

This book provides an in-depth analysis for adopting LTE (Long Term Evolution, the 4G 3GPP radio technology) as the technology of choice, to provide mission-critical communication services.

Written by four industry professionals, LTE for Public Safety explains how LTE can be used as technology enabler for Public Safety networks. It provides an in-depth analysis on how LTE can be used by the emergency responders for their own dedicated mission-critical network and the specialized features that are needed in LTE for providing robust and mission-critical communications amongst first responders. These include features such as group call communication and proximity services, also referred to as “LTE Direct” or Device to Device communication and discovery. It also provides a basic overview of the technology and some of the most important services available in LTE, providing also a justification why LTE was adopted for future Public Safety networks.

The book is not very long when the amount of information that is presented is taken into account. I found the writing and editing to be of very good quality for a 1st revision book. The diagrams that are presented are clear and appropriate for the material.

The book is oriented for features up to 3GPP Rel. 12. The Proximity Services and Group Communications topics are covered in detail. The authors are clear about what features are included in Rel. 12 and which ones remain to be worked on. Overall a very refreshing read for a highly technical book.

Mr. Street can tell a story as well as he could use a submission hold inside the ring and maybe even better. About the Author

Brian Overland published his first article in a professional math journal at age 14.

After graduating from Yale, he began working on large commercial projects in C and Basic, including an irrigation-control system used all over the world. He also tutored students in math, computer programming, and writing, as well as lecturing to classes at Microsoft and at the community-college level. On the side, he found an outlet for his lifelong love of writing by publishing film and drama reviews in local newspapers. His qualifications as an author of technical books are nearly unique because they involve so much real programming and teaching experience, as well as writing.

In his 10 years at Microsoft, he was a tester, author, programmer, and manager. As a technical writer, he became an expert on advanced utilities, such as the linker and assembler, and was the “go-to” guy for writing about new technology. His biggest achievement was probably organizing the entire documentation set for Visual Basic 1.0 and having a leading role in teaching the “object-based” way of programming that was so new at the time. He was also a member of the Visual C++ 1.0 team.

Since then, he has been involved with the formation of new start-up companies (sometimes as CEO). He is currently working on a novel.

An excellent book for the complete novice

C++ Without Fear, 2nd Ed

In the interests of full disclosure, I was provided a free copy of this book for review purposes. I am an experienced C++ programmer, and responded to a request (in a professional forum) for reviewers.

As a quick overview - an excellent first book for a complete programming novice; probably a little slow-paced for someone who knows other languages. The style and approach are well structured for the intended audience and there are few errors in the example code. It will provide you with a good grounding in the basics of C++, and no more - but that's its stated goal. You need to follow on with books such as "Effective C++" by Scott Myers, "OOAD with Applications" by Grady Booch, and some more advanced C++ books. This book (sensibly) declares templates to be an "advanced" issue and beyond its scope, so you'll need to look elsewhere for that information.

It is important to note the author's intended audience - namely someone whose computing knowledge goes little farther than "how to turn on a computer and use a mouse" (xxiii). This needs to be born in mind if you actually do know your way around a programming language. The approach to presenting technical concepts, and the level of technical language used, is well tailored to beginners - but will drive an experienced programmer to quickly look for another book.

Overall, this is an excellent first book for the pure novice. I would advise a true newcomer to ensure they read everything, including (even especially) the "optional" parts. The Preface (which potential engineers will be inclined to skip on instinct, smacking too much of reading the instructions) contains important information about the structure of the book, and where to find some of the essential tools. Overland describes his sidebars as "interludes", or digressions, but there is much important information buried in them. The appendices are also required reading!

One nice aspect is that Overland never uses a language feature he has not introduced, and never introduces a feature he does not immediately use in an example. And, rare nowadays for a book so loaded with examples, nearly all of the presented code will compile and execute as expected. An unfortunate side effect of this approach, however, is the the person wanting to learn C++ ends up knowing a lot about the C string library (perhaps it is simpler to introduce than, say, and strings oddly form a key component of most simple examples). Another example of using the 'C' approach in a C++ book is the use of the preprocessor for defining constants, when C++ has a perfectly good alternative with const - i.e. on page 225 you should use

const int SCR_LINES = 25;

rather than

#define SCR_LINES 25

Many language features come with "gotchas" if they are misused or abused, and Overland generally makes sure to introduce the warts when he provides a new feature. One area he missed is with the "sizeof()" operator. The reader is not told that taking the size of an array gives the total size, and not the number of elements. This is a common misconception, usually arising because the first time "sizeof()" is met is with char arrays. Just to clarify, the sizeof() operator provides the number of chars (usually bytes) needed to hold an instance of its parameter thus for the following:

int intArray[4];
char charArray[4];

sizeof(charArray) equals 4, but sizeof(intArray) equals "4 * sizeof(int)". To get the "length" of an array, you need "sizeof(intArray) / sizeof(intArray[0])".

I think that Chapter 8 (on files) would have been simpler to present if the string class has been introduced first. Also, the examples dealing with binary, read-write, files have an error and a trap for new programmers. When writing the data to the file, the size is given as "sizeof(name) -1" which fails to write out the 20th character of the "name" - this happens to be the NUL character terminating a full size string - which causes problems in later examples when the file is read back and printed out. Also, this example allows a file to be created with empty records and then these empty records to be read back in with no validation.

Importantly, Overland devotes an entire chapter to the whole concept of pointers. These are fundamental to programming in most modern languages, and often one of the hardest things to come to grips with for complete novices. The explanation is clear and concise, and most readers should be left with a reasonable understanding of them. However, I think references could have been introduced a lot earlier in function prototypes - which would have obviated the need to deal with them quite so early on in the book.

While templates are sensibly put off for more advanced books, only providing enough information to begin using the STL, the section on exceptions really needs more detail. While a novice programmer may not choose to use them in their own designs, almost any library they link to runs a high chance of being able to throw exceptions. Thus, the novice is gong to end up being intimately acquainted with exceptions whether they like it or not.

In case you're thinking I don't like this book, don't get me wrong. I'll repeat that I think it is an excellent starter for the complete novice. But if you're wondering whether or not to buy it, you really want to know it's problems as well as its strengths. So I'll wrap up with a list of my personal grievances - there is also an errata available on the web which I recommend you download and use to mark up the book. the following are not in the errata (yet).

- An exercise on page 203 suggests the following to check if a (c style) string contains "@@@": "if (strcmp(input_line, "@@@")) ...". This should read "if (strcmp(input_line,"@@@") == 0)" as a non-zero return means "not equal to".

- The binary read/write example on pages 212, 214, 215, and 216 needs to remove the "-1" from the sizeof for the name field.
- Exercise 11.1.1 on p 296 talks about the "\=" operator, when it should be the "/=" operator.
- The array initialization on p329 declares arr_of_fract[4] and then assigns 3 values, without explaining what happens to the 4th object.
- on p 371, the String class definition does not provide a type for the "ptr" member - should be "char *ptr;"

- Throughout the book, main() alternates between being defined as "void main()" and "int main()". Only the latter is correct. "Void main" harks back to the earliest K&R C language and has long been deprecated (or actually illegal) in C++.

- Virtual destructors are never explained, but their absence is a source of regular frustration in newbie's code.

- The book has a definite leaning towards the Windows world, with filenames containing "C:" for example.

- Many examples end with a call to "system("PAUSE");" to prevent the output console disappearing. They do not, however, include any headers to define "system()", and the "PAUSE" command is unique to Windows platforms. This was a source of frustration for my son when he tried to get his first example working.

- The compilers recommended in the preface are obsolete. There are much better free alternatives available today (for example: CODE::BLOCKS, Eclipse, Netbeans/C++) and this section needs to be updated.

- The biggest technical error I found in the book was on page 235, where Overland states that "variables are assumed to be private to the module in which they are created - unless and extern declaration is added". This is, in fact, completely the opposite of reality. In C and C++, the default linkage of a file-scope variable is GLOBAL, and the extern keyword just says "this is declared in another file".

These gripes aside (and there are always problems in technical texts!) it's a very good book, and I happily recommend it.

C++ and Programming for Beginners

Books attempting to teach beginners both programming and C++ are, of course, relatively rare. In the preface to this one the author says "What's different about this book is that I'm an advocate for you, the reader. I'm on your side. ...". And indeed the enthusiasm of the approach will probably be a great encouragement to the target audience. A persistent reader who worked their way through the book could learn a lot about programming and C++. There is a lot of good factual material and there are a number of clear and illuminating examples.

If the this reader read the book in its entirety they could, however, pick up a lot of misleading information, and miss out on some important fundamentals of programming, and of C++. For example, under the heading "What is not covered", the answer message starts "Relatively little as it turns out.". Yet, for example, the only container described in any detail in the chapter on the STL is std::list, plus the container adaptor std::stack. Iterators are briefly covered, but not the (STL) algorithms. The appendix "STL Classes and Objects" gives a nod to the wider scope of the standard facilities in this area, but only covers std::string, std::list, and std::stack, as the templates used in the text - and it does this in less than six pages.

Some things that I like about the presentation are the use of graphic schematics, such as the flowchart in the first chapter; and the fact that C++0x has been given some coverage (in Chapter 10, and elsewhere). Also pointers seem to be quite well explained, with useful graphics. On the other hand a lot of the text is very much C rather than C++ oriented; and the illustration of code to implement the assignment operator for a user-defined String class repeats the classic problematic use of delete[] preceding new[]. (The issue of potential self-assignment is relevant here as well, but is not raised.) This is symptomatic of an approach that does not, for me, sufficiently reflect current C++ knowledge and practice. (Selected appropriately for the target audience, of course, showing them today's approaches and idioms.) Yet another symptom of this is that the appendix titled "Standard Library Functions" only covers some functions "imported" from C. Two other appendices cover I/O and STL (see above), but the majority of C++ standard libraries and library functions are not even mentioned.

The book's text and website usefully points to a C++ IDE (DevC++), and mentions VC++ - but there is no guidance provided for readers who want to use an OS other than MS Windows.

In summary then, this book could reasonable be expected to be useful for its intended readership. But I think that the emphasis and indeed content could be greatly improved.

A fearless attempt to accomplish an impossible task

In my opinion, writing a beginner C++ book is impossible. C++ is too huge to be explained in general, and the sheer volume of details one needs to know even to write a "hello world" is enough to make one stop before even starting. Who is a "beginner", anyway? Someone with only the basic knowledge of computers, as author suggests? I don't think it's a good idea to start them on a very complicated language like C++. Someone who knows another computer language is better taught using similarities and differences between his language and C++. Someone who does not know other languages might be better off learning a specific framework first, and then looking at the wide world of C++.

That said, the book is a pretty good attempt at tackling this impossible task. Author tries to strike the delicate balance between explaining every detail (which are plenty in the simplest of examples) and trying to make the program do something interesting.

My main complaint is mixing C and object-oriented C++ approaches. Trying to use a little bit of both, in my experience, leads to enormous confusion. One can use char arrays, strcpy(), printf() and company, or std::string and streams to accomplish the same task. Learning both at the same time is hard. The book does not avoid this problem.

Mega fantastic fan art book

[[VIDEOID:moFJEEW7C5CZMX]]I like the Tribute series from Udon. This one's as good as Street Fighter Tribute and Darkstalkers Tribute.

The book is 304 pages thick. No dust jacket. The paper is thick low gloss type, thicker than Darkstalkers Tribute. Binding is good (thankfully).

Due to the success of earlier Tribute series, there are over 2500 entries submitted for this book but only close to 300 are selected.

The variety is incredible, from vector to manga, to 3D model to actual handmade dolls and paper toys. I like the Tribute series because I enjoy looking at the different interpretation by different artist. In a fan art book like this, there are lots of pleasant surprises, artistic style that are wildly different from official game art.

The quality of art is also very high. All the artists and their website are just below their illustrations which is really convenient if you want to learn more about the artist.

I used to play the game, the earlier series, so this book sure brings back some memories. It features art mainly from the original series, but there are also some art for Mega Man X, Zero, ZX and Legends. The other series probably can have a tribute book on their own.

This is a fantastic art book for fans and art lovers.

An amazing art book for a truly awesome series

Truly, who doesn't love Mega Man? The Mega Man brand name has produced some of the most exciting, excellently designed titles in the entirety of video game history, regardless of which series you consider. Everyone has some sort of special memory in their heart for Mega Man, and for those who consider him to be one of their most beloved video game franchises, buy this book immediately! It is, in its entirety, a real masterpiece of an art book.

First off, this book has about 300 pages, most of which have one big piece of fanart devoted to Mega Man. It's a very nice format that puts the focus purely on the art, with a small bit of text at the bottom with a little info on the artist. The variety of art styles here is amazing, and when you consider these 300 people were selected from over 2,500 submissions for the book, rest assured you are going to be treated to some incredible pieces of visual wonderment. You can expect to find some pieces you'll love more than others, but almost all bring something meaningful to the table in terms of artistic merit. I can't help but have a huge smile plastered over my face while going through this book. It's obvious each artist truly has a passion for the blue bomber, and it showed in their art. This is a book by fans for fans, and for that, it is one of the best art books I have ever seen. No joke. The printing done was fantastic too. The paper is high-quality and the colors are so vivid, it truly compliments and fulfills the original vision each artist had in mind when crafting their submissions. Bravo Udon!

There's also a fairly impressive variety of series that are represented in this book as well. A huge portion is devoted to the classic Mega Man series, obviously. There's also a fairly substantial amount of space devoted to the awesome Mega Man X series. In addition to those two, there's also art of the Mega Man Zero series (a personal favorite of mine, especially in its art design. If you believe that too, then getting the Megaman Zero Official Complete Works is a great idea too, as Zero is simply not represented enough in Tribute in my opinion, unfortunately), the ZX series, and the Legends series. If you wanted to see fan art of the Battle Network or the Star Force series, you're out of luck. You can always get their own Udon Official Complete Works art books to scratch that itch. Like I said earlier, the art depicting these truly iconic series is amazing. It just goes to show that Mega Man is truly a special franchise, so universally appealing to the imagination, that everyone has their own unique vision and view of the character and his adventures, and to see some of them depicted so vividly through so many different artists' perspective and style in this book is truly awesome.

This is one of the best art books I've ever owned, and definitely a high point in Udon's publication history, but I do have a couple of nit-picky complaints I feel are worth voicing. First off, while I love the variety of subject matter in the book, I can't help but wish it was a little more evenly spread out. The Zero and ZX games get very little space in comparison to Classic and X. I guess that's not surprising, but I would have love to see the real estate devoted to the Zero, ZX, and Legend series be a bit bigger, but that's a small complaint due to my personal preference, and doesn't do anything to bring down the quality of the book itself or its contents. Also, I've gone online and seen some of the submissions that didn't make it into the book and was left scratching my head as to why they were beaten by some of the weaker pieces in the book. I'll be honest, not every single piece is great, and a few are pretty weak and lackluster, in my opinion. Again, that may be purely preferential on my part. I wish/hope Udon does a Mega Man Tribute 2 in the future, as the potential for more incredible art is there, as evidenced by some of the truly spectacular pieces that, for some reason, were not chosen for this edition.

I have one more gripe, and this is more technical: the binding is not that great. Udon is known for this problem with their thick paperback books, and it's a problem here especially, due to how huge the book is. It's not a knock against the book, because it is to be expected with such a large book, but you need to be very careful with the book. Even then, you may find the binding start to come undone much sooner than you think. I'm *extremely* delicate with my copy, and even then I noticed the glued spine losing its hold quite quickly. Boo! Personally, I'd say it's worth spending a little more and getting the exclusive hardcover edition from Udon's online store. That edition has an exclusive art piece on its cover and it's obviously a lot more durable than this paperback edition.

All-in-all though, this is one of the best, most enjoyable art books I have ever owned personally, and I own quite a few. The subject matter of Mega Man, in all of the five forms included in the book, is a wonderful idea, especially for those who, like me, will always have a special place in their hearts for the Blue Bomber, X, Zero, Volnutt, or even the relatively new yet charming ZX characters, as well as all of their equally lovable supporting casts. It's clear this book was lovingly crafted from hundreds of people who all love Mega Man, for the purpose of being enjoyed by fans of Mega Man. It's an exceptional book, and I give it my highest recommendation. Buy it, enjoy the many unique depictions from Mega Man's spectacular history, and let this awesome celebration of a true gaming icon inspire you.

Beautiful and FRAGILE!!

The art work in here is unquestionably beautiful. I spent about 2+ hours enjoying the different takes of the Blue Bomber. When I received the book it was in immaculate condition. HOWEVER the binding is very weak to hold such a massive collection of art work and the pages are of top quality giving each page some weight, thus the pages will, your first time through break away from the spine. The book stays together, it's not leaving the cover but it did break away from it a bit and more so as you look through it over and over again.

I highly recommend this book for any art fan and especially any Mega Man fan, just be aware that the binding will break first time through with this soft cover edition. I should have spent the extra money one the hardcover library binder edition and will for future books of this magnitude in the future.
