About the Author

Justin Richards has written for stage and screen as well as novels and graphic novels. He writes extensively for children and has also co-authored several action thrillers for young adults with the acknowledged master of the genre, Jack Higgins. The first two novels in his adult science fiction Never War series, The Suicide Exhibition and The Blood Red City, were published in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Justin acts as creative consultant to BBC Books' Doctor Who titles, and he has penned quite a few himself. Married with two children (both boys), Justin lives and works in Warwick, England, within sight of one of Britain's bestpreserved castles.

Must Own Book For All Doctor. Who Fans

I love Doctor Who, so when I saw this book in the book store I couldn't resist picking it up. It turns out that I'm glad I did, because it's packed with fun Doctor Who facts and photos from throughout the entire series. Each chapter focuses on a different monster from the Doctor Who universe, and will not disappoint any fans of the series.

What you will find inside this awesome book:

 Top Secret Classified Torchwood files and letters with accounts of the Doctor and his enemies.
 Behind the scenes focusing on the inspirations, designs, writers, and pretty much all the little details you would want to know.
 Top notch Concept Art, and photos from both the original and current rebooted series.
 Mini posters featuring concept art and a brief description of each mini poster.

Bottom line is that this book is packed with amazing photos, facts and art that all Doctor Who fans would love, and is by far a must own for the most hardcore fans.

Letters From The Doctor.............

A nice collection of letters (mostly written by the Doctor himself) that expand upon stories that have taken place within the televised Who universe, and some that haven't. My only complaint? Not one, not even one letter penned by the Eighth Doctor. Seeing as how the 1996 television movie and the 2013 minisode "Night Of The Doctor" are the only televised Paul McGann (thus far) stories to draw from, perhaps it's due to lack of screen time. Still missed him here, though. An enjoyable read, and something I'll probably pick up and revisit from time to time.

This fully illustrated color book is a compilation of the many monsters and aliens that have been shown in the BBC episodes. The information contained in this book is the truth behind the torchwood files. It contains a lot of specific alien information that is not fully explained in the individual episodes.

This book is a collector’s edition with colored pictures filling each page. Each of the 288 pages are splattered with diagrams and illustrations. My son picked up this book and could not put it down. The detailed information was all consuming for him. He read the book from cover to cover and then started to look for other episodes online to watch the monsters that he had just read about. He knew that his brother would like it so much that we hid it from his and we are going to surprise him with it at Christmas.

This book is a must for your Doctor Who fan at Christmas time! They will not be disappointed with The Secret Lives of Monsters!

It Made Me Join!

This is a book a Mason would not want you to have! After reading so much negative garbage about Freemasonry, I bought this book out of curiosity. And when I opened it, boy was I shocked. This book contains all the duegard signs, the illusions, secret hand shakes, and passwords for the first three degrees. It gives the entire initiation process for the first three degrees, from the begining to the ending. It also contains the lectures and the story behind each degree. This book also has the opening of the lodge.

This is a must book for anybody who wants to get a peep inside the lodge. Even though this book is packed with a lot of good information, and give you a lot of insight on the craft and if you study it and somehow be able to master it, you still would not truly be a mason until you come into the Lodge the right way.

This book also contains additional degrees on the York Rite side of masonry. The degrees are Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and The Royal Arch. As for me I'm on the Scottish Rite side of masonry, so the additional information is of no use to me, but it's still good information to read.

If you want to try and fool somebody by saying you are a mason, with this book you might can pull it off. All you have to master is the first three degrees. But be aware, a true mason will throw some stuff at you that will make your head spin. Don't read this book and then go buy masonic gear or vehicle emblems, because if you cain't protect it, might get taken from you. Their's more to freemasonry than reading a book.

I highly recommend this book for anybody who is curious about the craft or anyone who looking to join the Lodge.

Freemason Classic Fully Illustrated for the use of Brethren!

This book is a classic, and a treasure. Reading about the rituals of Freemasonry is fascinating, but to see illustrations of the gestures that are described is to take the study up to the next level. Many Masonic symbols are illustrated and codes for reading certain Masonic texts are revealed. This is a handbook for Masons, but those who study without the lodge will gain some insight, from previous reading. This book will not give you a free pass into the lodge...but, it may inspire you to petition one! I keep the Hardback version on-display, beside The Holy Bible and "Freemasonry: A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol," by W. Kirk MacNulty. This Paper-back version is just as impressive as the Hard-back, the other one is simply prettier to look at on the shelf. Either way, you can't lose!

This is mildly interesting from a Masonic researchers point of view because the ritual is only somewhat dated. Today's ritual differs by jurisdiction. Most researchers are interested in very old ritual which was never written. This text represents somebody's rendering of some recent past interpretation. Masonically, it is of limited value. The secret of Freemasonry is ineffable. The ritual is designed to make a man think and find the meaning for himself. Read this and know nothing, but have it cause you to seek further light, then you will have something. This is the purpose of the ritual. Do not get hung up in "discovering" Masonry's secret. After all, you can find out everything thing there is to know about it, if you want. The question is: will you do anything with what you learn?

GREAT BOOK

I am the type of person who can tell if a book is good or not in the first few pages. This book is AMAZING, it deserves 10 stars. I cannot wait to finish reading it. Micaa keep writing, you have a fan and I enjoyed the first part of what I read. This book is well written and, not boring and has some humor to some of it. I will be recommending this to all my friends. GOOD READ!!!

Basic but good guidebook

This is a good, basic Minecraft guide for beginners. I am already familiar with the game through my kids so I already know most of the stuff in here. It is too bad that there are not more building ideas, the title of the book says it is a building ideas handbook, but there are more other stuff in it than actual building ideas. Besides that, this is a pretty good beginners guidebook.

The book says, house ideas, but there are no ideas to build houses. Basically, 99% of the book is about the basics of what Minecraft is, then at the end it shows four pages with a few pictures of houses, not even how to build them, just the pictures. We are sending the book back.

About the Author

Fred DeVito studied at The College of New Jersey where he received a B.S. in Physical Education and Health. In 2000, a Lotte Berk student, Annbeth Eschbach, approached Fred and his wife with an idea to merge fitness classes with holistic spa therapies and energetic healing programs. An essential guide for anyone wishes to lose weight and tone without injury

I've been doing Core Fusion workouts for years. The result? 120 pound weight loss, less injuries than I experienced in yoga or any other workout, and lengthening parts of my body I didn't think could be changed. A valuable resource for any writer!

A straightforward and easy to use book of writing prompts. The author gives us 366 prompts (bonus for the leap year), assigning one every day. While it is not necessary to take on each prompt on its assigned day, it would be quite a challenge to do so. This work is ideal for a writer, of any skill level, looking for inspiration. I'm sure that it is a resource to which I will return quite often through the year (and unlike a regular calendar, it will still be of use long after the current year has ended). Bottom line: This is an excellent value and a packet of "seeds" which may well generate many bouquets.

Full of Great Prompts for Writing

This has been an invaluable tool for writing and improving your writing habit. With daily prompts every day is a new challenge. J.C. Cauthon has the most clever prompts. They make your mind reel and the short story, poem or scene comes to mind and you have another product to show for your day of writing. It has really pushed my creativity to the max.

J.C. Cauthon is a writer herself and knows what spurs creativity very well. I keep it on my Kindle reader so that I can access it every day.

About the Author
Janet Rice Davis was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where music has always been an integral part of her family life. Although Janet's formal musical training was primarily in the classical field, she was fascinated with the stringed instruments, particularly those involved with folk and bluegrass music. In college she played the guitar and sang as a folk and blues musician in many of the Austin clubs, learning from such greats as Lightning Hopkins, Janis Joplin, and other well-known musicians, who played the same clubs. Today, Janet is primarily known as a bluegrass and five-string banjo specialist.

A great book that progresses naturally

I really like this book. In fact, I like it enough that this is the book I use with my banjo students. I particularly like how the lessons progress in a logical way. Each lesson seems to pick up from what you've just learned and then adds something to it. But what's probably even more important is that quite often there's a little bit of text reminding you what you've already learned. For example, in a piece of music there may be a notation that "this measure uses a forward roll". Then, "This measure uses a mixed roll". Or even, "This is a mixed roll but you've move one finger to a different string". That kind of teaching reinforces what you've already learned by reminding you later on as you use it in a slightly different way.

I havn't found a need to use the CD, but I've been playing guitar, mandolin and banjo for quite a few years. However, it has helped some of my students to learn a tune when they can hear how it's suppose to sound. So I think the CD is a valuable addition.

Yes, the cover's a bit goofy. If you're an adult student it can feel a bit silly to be working from what looks like a little kids coloring book. But the material inside is really solid. This is very much a case where you shouldn't judge the book by it's cover. It's a much better book that it appears to be.

A very fine book indeed

This is a book that should be in every begining bluegrass players hands. The book is easy to understand and can help you easily learn the bluegrass banjo. Janet teaches various methods you can use on the 5 string banjo, including rolls, licks, hammer ons, pull offs, slides etc, but she also starts teaching melodic and up the neck-so that when you are finished this book you should be fairly comfortable with many different styles to playing the bluegrass banjo. I found that you really have to listen to the cd over and over again to really capture the point she is teaching. You have to train your ear to listen for the melody notes (very important in bluegrass) while looking at the text and the tab. Overall a great book to get started with. I also use Wayne Erbson (?) newer book of bluegrass for the complete ignoramus (published 2004 or so and not the early one put out in the early 90's). Waynes NEW book along with Janets will have you playing right along in no time at all. If you want to get 2 books to start learning to pick bluegrass make it these 2.

Best beginner book I've seen- Do Not overlook this!!

I started banjo about a year ago, and bought other books first- Peter Wernick's BlueGrass Banjo in the Oak Publications series, all of which books are great; Tony Triska's book and video, also very good; and Earl Scrugg's book, essential reading for bluegrass pickers. I just got this book yesterday and started looking it over. I now wish I had started with this one.

Janet's teaching style is to progressively teach fundamentals and immediately apply them to repertoire, which is more fun, satisfying, and reinforcing than just reading about them and using them in a smaller number of songs. There are a lot of tunes in here! When you finish you will be able to play a number of tunes for yourself, family and friends, and with others. I can see progressing much more quickly with this book than the others because of that.

There is enough material in here to keep a beginning student busy for at least 6 months to 1 year I think. You also get up the neck and melodic style introductions in addition to Scruggs style. And definitely get the CD at least-not only does it illustrate what these licks and songs are supposed to sound like, but contains teaching explanations, and it has both slow and fast speeds so you can judge your progress. The advantage of the CD is also motivational- you can listen to the lessons ahead of working them, and think "soon I'll be able to play that!"- and with practice you will be able. If you are lucky to find a guitar student or player to back you up, you will have loads of fun!

Yes, it IS a beginner's book only- read the title- "You can teach yourself banjo". For more advanced techniques and material, you can and should look elsewhere. Forget the cover, and rip it off if you have to- there is good beginning fundamental material in here in a friendly and workable approach!

Dennis Lim is a writer and film curator in New York City. He is currently the director of programming at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. A former film editor and critic at the Village Voice, he is also the editor of The Village Voice Film Guide: 50 Years of Movies from Classics to Cult Hits (2009).

Insightful, Easy to Digest, Exposition of Lynch’s Sensibility and His Films.

“David Lynch: The Man from Another Place” is a short biography of the avant-garde filmmaker and overview of his films by Dennis Lim, who is the director of programming at the Film Society of Lincoln Center and a former film critic. David Lynch only made 10 feature films, yet he has been extraordinarily influential “without ever being absorbed into the Hollywood establishment,” very much unlike other influential directors of his generation. “Lynch’s signal achievement is the degree to which he has infiltrated the mainstream with an essentially avant-garde aesthetic.” Lim sets out to tell us where that aesthetic came from, what it is, and how it became so influential, while taking us through Lynch’s life, focusing primarily on his artistic career and sensibility.

The chapters progress chronologically, in the sense of Lynch’s influences, before becoming chronological in the sense of his films. I might not have thought to organize a biography this way, but Lim’s insight into Lynch’s thinking, his themes, and their origins led him to begin with the small-town middle-class idyll that inspired “Blue Velvet”. Rather than describing Lynch’s childhood in detail, Lim describes how it was later rendered in his films. In a short biography, this approach kills two birds with one stone –Lynch’s life and its relationship to his films- while laying the critical groundwork for more granular discussion of the films that will come later. By chapter four, Lynch is studying art in Philadelphia, living in a crime-ridden neighborhood that would inspire “Eraserhead”.

Once Lynch begins making movies, Lim goes through each one, discussing how Lynch became involved in the project, offering critical analysis of each film, and noting the critical and box office response. “Twin Peaks” and “Blue Velvet” get the lengthiest treatment. Lim also discusses Lynch’s work as a painter, his advocacy of Transcendental Meditation, and major events in his personal life, though these receive less attention than his films. I don’t agree with Lim’s praise of Lynch’s later films, but his understanding of Lynch as “the primitive artist of our most modern art” will make Lynch’s oeuvre comprehensible to even the most confounded viewer. Lim offers an insightful picture of the artist and his art in a small package. Be aware that the film criticism contains spoilers.

A well written homage to a great artist

I have read a bunch of books on Davd Lynch and so this one intrigued me. What stood out for me in DAVID LYNCH: THE MAN FROM ANOTHER PLACE by author Dennis Lim, was his inclusion of Lynch's other styles of art. It is understood that Lynch sees film as art, however, he explores all kinds of art from the painting to music to photography to his own personal work in Transcendental Meditation, which he has been more outspoken in recent years.

The book does set out to tell the story of David Lynch from a type of autobiographical point of view, but with a certain objective in mind: to explore the major turning points in Lynch's life, which Lim has defined 4 of them: the meeting of Toby Keeler; painting as a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; the 5-year duration it took to make Eraserhead where through his struggle discovered Transcendental Meditation; and hazily around the time of making Dune, his first large scale production and his first flop as a filmmaker and the making of Twin Peaks some years after.

The exploration of her personal life through TM made this book more unique to other Lynch books which just wants to cover the grounds of his cinematic work. While he will undoubtedly be known primarily for this, Lynch is an ardent student of meditation, stating to have never missed a day since he began his meditation. It really starts to paint a three-dimensional portrait of Lynch the man/artist. It bridges the gap between his bizarreness and creativity and supports his visions to not be of pretentiousness, but rather of inner exploration.

I enjoyed this work as it was not overburdened with personal opinion or essays on a collection of films, as other authors have done. It is well balanced and well written making this a great homage to a director who has achieved fame through unconventional filmmaking.

What Could Have Been..

Clocking in at just under 200 pages, "Dennis Lynch: The Man From Another Place" is pretty short for a biography and it shows in the brevity and quality of the coverage. The book focuses more on Lynch's work than the man himself and even then what's here is extremely brief. "Welcome to Twin Peaks" is the longest chapter and it is less than two dozen pages. Meanwhile scores of other people have written books on just that series longer than this overarching look of Lynch's entirety. As you can imagine, the end result is a very shallow albeit it very well written look at the movies,TV shows and other creations from Lynch's imagination. The author could have easily double the page count and really gone into depth with not only each of Lynch's creations, be it his photos, music or more, but it really could have gone far more in depth with Lynch as a person. Who he is, why he does what he does, his relationship with other people, a look at Lynch growing up and his family. Things like that. Instead we get just a taste of what could have been and it leaves you feeling like "The Man From Another Place" is only an exert of a larger, greater book that never was and never will be.

What's here is fine, but there are other books about Lynch that go into far more depth, are a better value for the money and are a better choice if you really want to read about the man.
