Call me a twaddling fanboy if you like, but Popkiss is a hugely enjoyable evocation of a lost age of independent music--one that meant a lot to me then and continues to fascinate now. White writes with considerable wit and verve, and I didn't detect any "journalistic errors," though nor was I searching for any. At times I wish he could go into more detail--this book flies by, and there are some avenues not fully explored. But I've been entranced by this peek behind the curtain of a scene that partly defined my youth. Sarah always brought out the haters: plus ca change, it seems.

A great historical overview of a wonderful label

I was a big fan of Sarah Records in the early 90's, and this book is a wonderful history of the label and the bands and the people involved. It's a great introduction for people unfamiliar with Sarah, and a great trip down memory lane for existing fans.

and made me a better music fan

I went into Popkiss a minor Sarah fan (mostly because of Blueboy and The Hit Parade). I left Popkiss not only with a renewed and expanded interest in Sarah, but with warm fuzzy feelings about indie pop at large and my relationship to it as a fan.

The closest comparison I can make is to Simon Reynold's postpunk survey Rip It Up and Start Again. The structures and writing styles of both books are similar, certainly. More importantly, though: both books challenged my perceptions about their subject matters, got me thinking about how I engage with music, and made me a better music fan. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in 80s/90s indie.

Terry Lindvall is C. S. Lewis Chair of Communication and Christian Thought at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia. Previously he taught at Duke University's Divinity School and was the Walter Mason Fellow of Religious Studies at The College of William and Mary. He is the former president of Regent University, where he was professor of film and communication and the arts and held the Distinguished Chair of Visual Communication. He is the author of Surprised by Laughter: The Comic World of C.S. Lewis; The Mother of All Laughter: Sarah and the Genesis of Comedy; and The Silents of God: Selected Issues and Documents in Silent American Film and Religion, 1908-1926, among other works.

Terry Lindvall On The Need For Holy Taunting

“Within the sacred texts lie traces of holy taunting,” writes the author of God Mocks. He then goes ahead to back this claim by chronicling the relationship between Christianity and satire since time began. From the prophets like Ezekiel to modern day satirist like Stephen Colbert, God Mocks gives a chronology that includes over one hundred names with varying styles of humour unique to most. The book also recounts witty jokes that rocked the Christian world with careers that went down the toilet with them.

God Mocks says that those who practice humour are like the prophets of old in the Bible. The book reveals prophets using satire as a chastening rod to nudge people into the right path. The author writes,

“…satire with the biblical texts exposes the follies of God’s people with both sensual and scatological imagery, such as the Hebrew prophet Ezekiel lying naked, writing about the large-membered mules that Israel runs after, and baking nauseous barley cakes with human dung. Such images unleash a shocking satiric judgement upon the unfaithfulness of God’s people.”

This book does not only narrate the history of Christian satire, but tries to explain its very nature. God Mocks delves into what makes some kinds of satire successful and what renders others damaging and hollow.

As far as style goes, God Mocks is quite a dry read. If you don’t mind a scholastic style with loads of names, then this might be for you. Though God Mocks is a book about humour, it does not seek to entertain; instead, it opts to instruct.

Finally Get To Learn!

I've always wanted to figure out how to play the guitar. I have tried guitar training videos, taken classes, and so much more but couldn't pick it up. I found this book and began to look through it.

I've picked up my guitar again and started from the beginning of the book. To me, the beginning of any guide book should grab your attention and help you to easily pick up whatever you are learning. To my surprise, it happened immediately. I loved how the author laid out the different steps and exercises in an easy to follow manner.

If you have been struggling learning to play the guitar like I have, try this book out. It is easy, enjoyable, and very helpful! Totally Worth It!

Very detailed and well written

I always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and tried twice. However, I found it too difficult and gave up . I think if I had this book at the time, I would have been encouraged to keep at it.
I like the fact that this book starts by teaching what not to do when learning to play the guitar. This is really useful because it helps the reader to start off in the right way. The author discusses both basic and more complex stuff. For example from early on in the book he discusses thumb positioning, knowing the right type of guitar for you, accessories needed etc. He then progresses into more complex stuff like Bar chords, Fast chord changing etc.
The book is very visual as the author has included beautiful pictures which he uses to illustrate his points; there is no way you would misunderstand the point he is making with the added pictures.
This book is written simply with nice catchy titles, so that anyone can easily follow it and flow along. It is obvious that it has been written by someone who truly loves the guitar and knows what he is talking about
My personal highlights from the book are the sections on finger exercises and the testimony section which show that the author's strategy works.
This is a really detailed book so well written and not tiresome to read.

About the Author
Jenny Lerew is an animation story artist and the author of a noted blog on animation art and history, The Blackwing Diaries. She is also the author of Scrambled Ink, a compendium of original illustrated stories, and has worked as a director and story artist at Warner Bros, Amblimation, Turner, Disney, and DreamWorks. Her most recent film was DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon. Jenny lives in Pasadena, California.

John Lasseter is a two-time Academy Award-winning director and the chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Brenda Chapman is the director of Brave. She previously directed DreamWorks Animation Studios' 1998 release, The Prince of Egypt, and worked as a story artist on a number of beloved films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, including The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Fantasia/2000. Chapman was also the story supervisor on Disney's The Lion King.

Mark Andrews is the director of Brave. He has worked in Pixar's story department on a number of feature films including The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, and Toy Story 3, and also co-wrote and co-directed the Academy Award® nominated Pixar short film One Man Band. Most recently, Andrews was co-writer and second unit director on the Disney film John Carter.

Lovely art book

This is a lovely art book for the movie Brave. This is number 13 for Pixar if anyone's counting.

The book's 160 pages and it's all filled with art and commentary. The concept art is great and you can really feel that everything really fits well together, the characters, the landscape and the stories. There are character designs, environment drawings, sculpts, storyboards and colorscript.

This is Pixar's first period film. The environment designs are a bit dark but that's because the movie is set in ancient Scotland. It's interesting to see a mythical and worn landscape as designed for animation. The colour choices are quite muted, perhaps to give more contrast to Merida.

The characters and art are delightful to look at. They are so full of personality. They have all sorts of characteristics and shapes that make them stand out. There are a few pages of storyboard sequences that are really great, even without words you know the chemistry between the characters and how they are feeling.

Steve Pilcher is the production designer and there's a lot of his charming drawings included. His pencil drawings really beautiful and dimensional. They really bring the characters and places to life. Other artists included are Carter Goodrich, Steve Purcell, Noah Klocek, Matt Nolte and more.

The book doesn't really talk about the story as a whole, but the text do cover the characters and their development. So there's bits and pieces of spoilers throughout.

Overall, it's a wonderful book put together by author Jenny Lerew. It's a good read with great art.

Highly recommended for fans of Pixar and animation art.

Beware of Spoilers!!!!

First of all, let me state this is a fantastic book. All aspects of the film are covered, including backgrounds, major and minor characters, structures and creatures. Development of how these were brought about is gone over in depth.

However, those of you who preorded the book (as I did) and don't want to know the plot of the movie need to be warned that there are major spoilers included. Most of the movie is story boarded in black and white and in color, and you will pretty much know the whole film if you page through the book in detail, as I tend to do with "art of" books. Again, if this is not a problem for you, its a great book and dig in. But if you want to stay surprised as too major plot points in the movie, I'd wait until after the film before opening up.

Amazing...

This is incredible Art Book about the movie Brave. All the work what they do by PIXAR for this movie showing in this book and is excellent drawings telling the whole story. The pictures, landscapes look so real. I'm just waiting for this movie right now and I know will be great movie. The story is from Scotland love this country so much.
If you are interested drawings or talented with that, get this "The Art of Brave" ... and have fun.

About the Author

Mark Holden earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at Duke University in 1978. During his time there, he participated in an acoustic study of Duke’s student union as part of a physics course. This experience came full circle when he worked on the renovation of Duke’s Baldwin Hall (explored as a case study within this text). He has lectured at Harvard’s School of Design, Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering, is a member of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, the United States Institute of Theater Technology (USITT), and an elected fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

About the Author

Mordden you know

As usual, Mordden writes with impeccable authority, wit, and style on the most important figure in late 20th century musical theater.

Indeed, if there is a better writer on the subject, I've never heard of, let alone read, him/her/it.

What is most impressive is the exhaustive amount of information he manages to cram into such a slim (albeit closely spaced) volume.

Two things, though: Meryl Secrest's bio of Sondheim is an almost unreadable work and there is CERTAINLY room for a better one, and, in the discography I find no mention of "Putting it Together" (Goodtimes entertainment 05-81268) the British (and Broadway) revue modeled on the same structure as "Marry Me A Little" starring Carol Burnett, George Hearn, John Barrowman, Ruthie Henshall, and... Bronson Pinchot?!

If you have any interest at all in musical theater, read this... and all the other Mordden (I'm always so proud to spell that correctly) works on the subject

Opinionated indeed! Despite being a Sondheim fan for almost 50 years, seen all the shows, attended his lecture, read all the books, I have still gained added insight into the composer, his work and his process from this short book. I always enjoy Mordden's style even if I don't always agree with him. Highly recommended.

With two "d's" ~~

I agree wholeheartedly with the prior reviewer, enubrius: ON SONDHEIM: AN OPINIONATED GUIDE is not to be missed. In the world of theatrical writing, there are academics, there are career journalists, and there are "theater people" -- Mr. Mordden, due to his great experience and prior work, combines all the best attribute of the three camps, with perhaps special concentration in the last. This relatively short book is powerful and powerfully interesting, whether you're a relative newb out to learn more about America's greatest living Broadway composer, or a more seasoned observer who has had exposure to some of Mordden's earlier works.

To add a mild clarification: This book is indeed "Opinionated" but those who expect a slash-and-burn from Mordden will probably be disappointed. He is not slow to assail a (very few) critics or journalists with labels like "stupid" and he did himself no favor in the second paragraph of the book in proclaiming that Sondheim's Ethical Culture/Secular Humanist background left him "free of the occult confusions that religion invents." (A few pages later the author chokes on the result of that unnecessary judgment, being virtually obliged to overlook the religious import of a song like "You'll Never Walk Alone," which he merely describes as "folksy.") But on the whole the tone is readable, genial, perhaps lightly professorial, lightened by Mordden's almost complete avoidance of shopworn theater cliches in favor of metaphors that tell: A backstage shouting match becomes a "geschrei"; in the 2014 film adaptation of INTO THE WOODS the Witch, Meryl Streep, doesn't just leave the room: She "gazungles into a twirly mist and then evaporates."

With its focus on Sondheim's work (not neglecting TV and movies), including an excellent bibliography and discography at book's end, ON SONDHEIM is a book practically anyone can appreciate; it would also make a fine holiday gift.

and I think you retain it better if you scream "THAT'S EFFING WRONG

Borrowed a friend's copy. Unless he edited the hell out of the book, it's wrong in the first couple chapters. I ended up googling the correct syntax a few times to the point that I just gave the book back. I give it 3 stars because it's wrong, but you can figure it out, and I think you retain it better if you scream "THAT'S EFFING WRONG!" at the book repeatedly and find the correct answers elsewhere.

I am a novice to Python programming and decided to learn it after reading this book, though before I read some other books on programming and particularly Python. While learning this system though the book and practicing it I got an understanding that mastering my skills in Python programming, after sometime I can easily use all other coding languages as codes’ rules are similar and Python is perfect for a start. The book is good for understanding the theory and using the main and particular features practically, it was successful even at first steps. As a newbie I'd recommend this book to others, thanks.
