The Star Trek Enterprise Model NCC 1701 began its journey in 1964 in my father's model shop, most of us had our first sighting of it in 1966 when it flew across out TV screen. It was donated by Paramount Studios to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, where it will once again be on display for all its fans to view, in the summer of 2016. From Gene Roddenberry's imagination to Matt Jefferies ability to draw what was in Gene's head, to the Howard Anderson Co. for special effects, to my father's ability to read, decipher and construct from those blueline plans to what we see today, my father had a wonderfully specialized talent and this is his story to tell. N. Datin McDonald is the daughter of Richard C. Datin Jr.,The Star Trek Enterprise Model Maker. She spent her childhood in Malibu CA. Has a B.A. from U.C.L.A. and many years of experience as a floral designer and owner in Solvang, CA. She is currently a photographer of animals and landscapes, and resides with her husband and Chairman Mao, the cat boss, in the Pacific North West.

Meet the *Real* builder of the U.S.S. Enterprise..!

Just finished reading "The Enterprise NCC-1701 and the Model Maker" by N. Datin McDonald. This short but extremely interesting book accomplishes the much needed task of filling in some gaps in the history of what is perhaps the most iconic spaceship ever created for American science fiction media.

As an artist and scale modeler myself, I greatly appreciated the clear technical treatment and information on how model maker Richard C. Datin constructed the original three-foot and the later eleven-foot shooting miniatures of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Alas, there are few photos of the time and the paper trail surrounding this project is thin -- but as the author points out, her father was a working modeler and at the time building these spacecraft was "just another job," as no one back then could ever guess as to just how popular Star Trek would become. As the original miniature undergoes some much needed restoration at the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum in preparation for its new unveiling in 2016 (Star Trek's 50th anniversary year), I felt very privileged to experience this book's nostalgic glimpse back on it's creation.

The volume also relates stories about some of the other TV and movie modeling projects Mr. Datin was involved in, culminating in later life with his interest in the collection and restoration of steam locomotive railroad engines and cars as the founding curator of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.

I won't spoil it by telling you what it is, but at the books' end, readers are treated to a simple little photograph of the head-stone for Mr. Datin's final resting place and it is sure to spark a little thrill for every Star Trek fan. My posthumous thanks go out to Mr. Datin, who sounded like a wonderful man and a creative artist who gave us all an enduring legacy that has helped so many of our dreams take flight among the stars -- and also thanks to his daughter for taking the time and effort to compile this short but meaningful chronicle of her father's skill and talent.

If you're at all interested in Star Trek or model building, treat yourself with a copy of this book for your home library.

Beam me up Richard!!!

Written mostly in Richard Datin's own words, gleaned from his many correspondences with primary sources and interested parties, it was left to his daughter to excerpt, edit and put it all together many years later! That the documentation isn't complete and the story doesn't flow as well as we might wish, can all be attributed to the oft quoted phrase of "hindsight being 20/20". Certainly at the time the key parts of this story played out, there was no notion that this would be anything other than "just another job"! That the author has managed to sort through the documents and material holdings of her father's three separate working lives, and give us this much of a glimpse, showing the industry practices and institutional ineptness of that era onto our own, is truly an impressive feat, and much welcomed. I would have wished for much more development of his years founding and collecting for the Nevada State Railroad Museum, covering what I consider to be his vastly more important work of preserving the history of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, along with its orphaned step-child, the Carson & Colorado Railroad, both children of the fabulous Comstock Bonanza's of the mid to late Nineteenth Century. Perhaps I may hope for a sequel to this text covering that later, and more seminal career, in far great depth. For now, this volume of the life of a truly interesting man will have to suffice, and Trekkie's everywhere should rejoice.

Fascinating first-person account of the creation of the U.S.S. Enterprise

A delightful memoir from Richard Datin's daughter about the mysterious work that he was doing in the family garage and his workshop, when called upon to turn Matt Jefferies' design for a spaceship into the graceful U.S.S. Enterprise. This inexpensive and interesting book traces Datin's history with the project from his first work on a wood model shown to Gene Roddenberry in 1964 to the remodeling done on the 11-foot version of the ship when the new STAR TREK series was green-lighted as a series. This breezy history fills in the blanks in the oft-told creation story for the famous spaceship, and it follows the elder Datin and his fascination of steam-powered locomotives and the railroad museum that he left as a legacy.

About the Author

Sonia E. Sultan is Professor of Biology and Professor of Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University, where her research group studies plant ecological development. She has long been a major contributor to the empirical and conceptual literatures on individual plasticity and its relation to ecological breadth and adaptive evolution. Sultan studied History and Philosophy of Science at Princeton University, followed by graduate work in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. She was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of California (Davis) Center for Population Biology, and a Fellow of the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin).

Christopher Duffy currently leads cybersecurity and penetration testing engagements globally. He has a specialization in advanced technical testing, including penetration testing and security assessment done to evaluate an organization's security strategy from a malicious actor's perspective. Chris has over 12 years of experience in the information technology and security areas, including security consultation, with a focus on business risk. He has helped build advanced attack and penetration teams. The work that his teams have done has encompassed everything from threat modeling and penetration tests to firewall reviews and FedRAMP readiness assessments. Chris has led, managed, and executed over 400 engagements for Fortune 500 companies, U.S. government entities, medical providers and payers, educational institutes, financial services, research organizations, and cloud providers. For almost a decade prior to private sector work, Chris was a cyber warfare specialist, senior systems engineer, and network infrastructure supervisor for the United States Air Force (USAF). He has been honored with numerous technical and leadership awards. Some of these include the (ISC)2 Information Security Leadership Award (ISLA) for the information security practitioner category in 2013, the noncommissioned officer of the year (both at the base and wing levels) in 2011, and the top technician within the cyber transport career field for the United States Air Force (USAF) Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency. He is a distinguished graduate of USAF network warfare training and has publications to his credit in SANS Reading Room, Hackin9 magazine, eForensics magazine and PenTest magazine. He holds 23 certifications, a degree in computer science, and a master's degree in information security and assurance.

Develop your own pentesting tools with Python

This textbook served as a detailed technical overview and guide for conducting network and system attacks using tools that you will build. You are first introduced to established assessment methodologies, to include the Open Source Security Testing Methodology Manual (OSSTMM), The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP), and the Penetration Testing Execution Standard (PTES). The PTES is the primary methodology referenced in the book.

Several well-known and established penetration testing tools are covered, to include Metasploit, NMAP, Veil, and John the Ripper. An introductory chapter on Python coding is included for readers who have not used Python extensively before. The book covers nearly every phase in many cyber-attack methodologies, to include initial recon, exploitation, brute force attacks, lateral movement, and exploit development, all of which are covered from a Python developer's point-of-view. The author provided enough preliminary review information in each chapter to ensure the reader understands what is occurring and what is being affected with penetration tools they are developing.

Surprisingly applicable and extremely useful...

The best part about this book is that it isn't like the hundreds of others that make assumptions about prior knowledge. I was able to take it, understand its concepts, and apply them without having to look too far beyond. Some knowledge of penetration testing methodology and basic programming concepts apply, but this book doesn't require you to have taken advanced computer science sources prior to picking it up, understanding it, and applying it immediately. Very well done.

Learning Penetration Testing with Python by Christopher Duffy is a must have. This book takes the reader through the fundamentals of penetration testing in an easy-to-read fashion while demonstrating the functionality of Python and its uses in penetration testing. Unlike other hacking with Python books, this work does not assume that the reader is familiar with Python. This work does an excellent job of explaining key Python concepts at an introductory level. Likewise, as the reader progresses through the book, the reader is able to understand and implement more complex Python and penetration techniques. About the Author
John "Bones" Rodriguez, is an Actor, Author, and Solopreneur born and raised in New York where he lives with my wife and son. Yes- you HAVE seen him on TV. He does improv comedy for kids and adults, writes sketches and short plays, a little TV, and a ton of commercials. He has a very tiny IMDB, but has made over $400,000 as an actor from SAG so far. But it wasn't always like that. While many of his friends were waiting tables, temping, or quitting acting altogether for "real" jobs, he chose to learn how to make money without a day job. It took a while to learn (like everything worth doing), but after a while he was free to audition without asking anyone for permission or time off. He started booking acting work slowly, but soon people were calling often. It was the freedom that made it all possible, and that's what he teaches. After being asked a few thousand times why I didn't have a day job, he wrote the first edition of this book several years ago to help other actors create extra income and not have day jobs either. At first, people were very resistant to the idea, but as the internet matured, and they kept seeing him on TV more and more, they began to change their minds. His new-found freedom also allowed him to pursue another dream as an author, and he wrote "Captain Kirk's Guide to Women- How to Romance Any Woman in The Galaxy" for Simon and Schuster, in 2008. Again, it was the freedom that made it all possible. So YES- he know what he's talking about, and he gets paid from other interests aside from the "usual" acting gigs. This book is packed with information! I had no idea all the ways you can make money online. No More Waiters has opened my mind to so many possibilities I never knew existed and I'm so happy I bought this. I'm in the process of creating my own business online right now and it's because of Bones Rodriguez and the way he breaks it down for you in this book. It's not a scam! There's a lot of stuff you'll learn but it's up to you to apply the knowledge. It's exciting! If you're tired of your day job and are interested in learning something new that will free up your time to live a more creative life buy it!

Have you ever heard the expression, "When the student ...

Have you ever heard the expression, "When the student is ready, the teacher will show up"? Well, let me tell you that when I say I, as the student, was ready, Bones (John) Rodriguez showed up and through this book taught me that there is life outside of a job. One of the main points that he stresses in this book is that we don't have to trade our precious time for money. What a concept if you really think about it. He introduces a whole new way to make financial gain by building an online vending machine that even produces income while you're sleeping. This book is an incredibly quick read. I couldn't put it down. I was too excited by what I was learning. What he teaches in this book provides a solution to my current job situation. Thanks Bones!

Yes! Yes! Yes! You will not regret reading this book. It is certainly an eye opener, and a game changer for life. When I read this book, it changed everything I ever thought about pursuing an acting career. Bones is also a personal mentor, and wants to teach actors how they can make time to always be available for an audition, and still have money in the bank! Too good to be true? I thought so too, until I realized, wait, I guess this is the 21st century, and there are many ways to make money the non traditional ways. Get this book! You won't regret it.

Wonderful companion. Lots of great character art.

There's so much personality that comes from the way they dress and also the way they stand. All of them look terrific and solid, like they have weight.

Each main character, or each Hero, has a few pages of art that consists of three full page artwork of a game screenshot, a full coloured illustration and a 3D render in grayscale. Usually, I don't like game screenshots but in this case, there's actually some sort of painterly effect on the character screenshot and it actually looks quite good. The art direction and treatment is nice and often gives the characters a caricature and stylised feel. Even the 3D grayscale renders look like they were painted. In addition to the full page artworks, the other pages are filled with smaller sketches, and coloured concepts and costume variations.

Creature designs are also beautiful. I prefer the raw texture of the pencil sketches to the digitally coloured concept drawings. Character and human designs talk up 135 out of this 192-page hardcover artbook.

The environment art look great too. I love the houses and the quirky way they look with the slight slant applied. The mood and atmosphere are terrific, especially the evening or night scenes with glowing elements with diffused lighting. There aren't a lot of prop designs, but mostly the trees, stone relics, Demon Doors, brickwork of the houses.

Last few pages are the Hero cards and ability icons as they appear in game.

There's a good amount of text too, not too lengthy, that talks about the designs for all the artworks.

Overall, it's a wonderful companion to the game. Get it for the character designs.

Debbie Reynolds is an actress, comedienne, singer, dancer, and author best known for her leading roles in Singin' in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, and on TV as Bobbi Adler in Will & Grace. After more than sixty years in the entertainment industry, she is truly a Hollywood icon. Today, she performs her one-woman show around the world, making films and television appearances, and writing a weekly syndicated advice column.

Dorian Hannaway was the director of late-night programming at CBS-TV for more than fifteen years, supervising the production of The Late Show with David Letterman; The Kids in the Hall; and The Late, Late Show. She has known Debbie for more than thirty years, and has written and produced many projects with her.

Wonderful! Debbie is a Gem

What a wonderful book. Full of recollections of Debbie's career and her friends and family. I read in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. Finally got to meet her assistant Donald through her introduction of him in her book and cried when she talked about her former assistant Jen whom I had met and also loved. Beautiful pictures that haven't been published before. Highly recommended. I truly love this woman.

A Collection of Anecdotes from a Hollywood Veteran

I had not previously encountered Debbie Reynolds's previous books, so did not have any autobiographical context to draw upon in evaluating this latest collection of anecdotes and observations.

Having been in the business over seven decades now, Reynolds is one of the few surviving links to the so-called "Golden Age" of the Hollywood studios, when MGM could claim with justification that they possessed "more stars than there are in heaven." The fact that most of their contracted employees lived a life of perpetual servitude, even in the early Fifties, was cleverly suppressed. As a teenage actor and dancer, first employed by Warner Brothers and then MGM, Reynolds not only received a decent education but had the good fortune to star in some rather good movies, most notably SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952). She does not talk too much about her studio days in his book, other than to describe Elizabeth Taylor's rather unhappy existence as a star who was perpetually on show, even while not making movies. Reynolds remains sympathetic towards Taylor's predicament, despite the fact that Taylor stole Reynolds's first husband Eddie Fisher from her in the late Fifties.

We hear other anecdotes about Reynolds's lengthy career in movies, television, and the stage. She is obviously proud of certain roles, notably THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN (1964), and the stage version of IRENE (1973), which ran for over 700 performances on Broadway and toured throughout the USA. In later life Reynolds carved out a career doing her one-person show combining song and comedy; she had a particular talent for mimicry that she developed to the full.

Yet perhaps what emerges most tangibly from this book is Reynolds's basic reticence. Brought up mostly in Texas, she was accustomed to a world where people did not reveal their feelings in public and refrained from cursing. A throwback to more innocent times, she has found it difficult to adapt to the freer morals of the contemporary era; perhaps this helps to explain why she and her daughter Carrie Fisher did not talk to one another for two years. Reynolds refuses to dish the dirt on her movie and stage contemporaries, however much they might have wronged her - as a result, this volume can seem a little anodyne in tone. While being extremely talented and optimistic in nature, she maintains a facade of kindness that renders her a winning personality in public but leads to rather cliché-ridden writing.

Debbie Does Make Me Laugh!

I have loved Debbie Reynolds for as long as I can remember. As a little girl, my parents got me the record of her singing "Tammy". I seriously think I wore a hole through it, I played it and sang along so often. Reading the memories of her life and friends brings me back to my own childhood and watching all of Debbie's movies. It also gave great insight into her crazy life off stage as well. The friends she had (Debbie and Elizabeth Taylor? After that divorce from Eddie, who would have thought?), Ava Gardner and Lana Turner, even Liberace! The parties, the heart aches, the hugs they had for each other. Debbie's stories show that actors are really just people after all.
Thanks for sharing the memories with us. This is one book I will definitely re-read several times.
PS- the story at the end was beyond hysterical! I could visualize Debbie and Carrie trying to get Todd's dog out of the tub, with Todd's lovely wife Catherine Hickland standing there in a bit of shock!

You Gotta Have Buckets

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

If I knew nothing of social media, I'd likely rate this book 5 stars. It's a well-written, easy to follow introduction to social media. Syme makes a great point about SMART Social Media. It has to be Sustainable, Manageable, Author-specific, Relevant, with Tactics last, strategy first.

I asked for a review copy of the book because I continue to look for a social media guide that spells out exactly what I need to do. This book did that in two ways:

1. It gave a suggested (emphasis on suggested) breakdown of the time you should spend on different activities. This is the first book on social media that I've picked up that does that. Of course, the writing comes first, but this book gives a (suggested) answer to the question many writers ask: Am I spending too much time on social media or not enough?

2. The other part of this book I found valuable was the buckets. She suggests creating content buckets of things to share with your fans. For example, she believes everyone should have a Products/Sales/Brand bucket (basically, the self promo bucket), a Shout Out/Thank you/Recommendation bucket (other authors' books you love and recognizing readers, being thankful etc), and a Giveaways/Contest/Polls bucket. Add to these additional buckets that are more personalized.

Those are the two big things I took away from this book that I haven't gotten in the other marketing books I've read. Very useful. I definitely think this is worth reading, especially for authors who are new to social media. Do I feel like I can now practice SMART social media? Maybe. My biggest issue is that I haven't created a social media habit. That's another tip Syme touched on, and if I can wrap my mind around a way to efficiently put content into my content buckets, I might have a chance to connect more with my readers. ( I WANT to connect more, but I'm the most boring person on the planet. :-)

Practical advice that every author needs

If you are an author, you need to promote yourself on social media. As Chris Syme says.

You may already be using social media to build a fan base around your books, but you’d like to learn how to use it more effectively. This book is for you. If you are a skeptic, I think you’ll like my premise that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to marketing."

"Authors must wear a marketing hat -- no exceptions." I agree. I'm working on my fourth book now and have created marketing plans and promoted or promised to promote them all, plus two books by other authors. This book the advice I always needed.

If you've already written a book and want to know how to promote it, your answers are here. If you're at the proposal stage, read this short book and use it to beef up the marketing section of your proposal.

The SMART in "SMART Social Media" is, of course, an acronym. Syme wants you to think about a plan that's:

Sustainable. You can keep it going.
Manageable. It doesn't take over your life.
Author-specific. It's not generic, it's suited to your strengths and contacts.
Relevant. It's suited to your book and your audience.
Tactics last. That is, strategy first.

This book is not a laundry list of a thousand pieces of tactical advice, because every book needs a plan that's uniquely fitted to that book and that author. (Also because tactics change rapidly, and this book needs to stay relevant for more than 15 minutes.) It's more about getting into the mindset than about what price to pay for Facebook ads. But there are plenty of specifics here that any author can sink their teeth into.

A few key takeaways that stuck with me:

- Focus on building networks organically. While the book addresses paid ads on Facebook and Twitter, these are for campaigns -- it's connecting to your fan base that will pay off in the long run.
- Don't target everybody. Choose a specific audience and reach out to them (you know, like people who care about bad writing).
- Choose the right Facebook tools. Facebook is the queen of social media marketing for authors. Syme goes through the strengths and weaknesses of profiles, fan pages, and groups. After reading this, I immediately realized that Facebook groups would be an ideal tool for me to build up next.
- How to prioritize social tools. Syme divides social tools into three groups. The "big 3" are Websites, Mailing Lists, and Facebook. Every author should use these. The "next 3" are Pinterest, Author Pages, and Blogs -- these are useful for some authors. And the rest -- Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Video, and Podcasts -- are a lot less useful, unless you've made them a specialty. This is far better advice than the usual "Here are 12 things an author can do" with no consideration for the balance between time spent and value generated.
- How to build a campaign planning calendar. Having worked on five books (with another in process), I've learned the rhythm. Sell first, then write, then wait 6+ months, then launch. Somehow, the "wait" stage always turns into recovery, when it ought to be planning. I'll be using Syme's calendar to plan the launch for my next book, making sure I have all the promotable pieces lined up well ahead of time.

There were a few things I was wishing for. I'd love to see some more specific case studies for books, especially non-fiction books (it's a little hard to write a manual that addresses romance novelists and business strategy authors in one place). And I'd like some specific advance on advertising -- Syme includes some, but I crave numbers. But all in all this is a quick, enjoyable read that any author would find useful.

Smart resource, for sure

I'm as grateful to this author for creating this resource as I am for how accessible -- and relevant -- she has made it. I work with lots of authors and others who want to make effective use of social media. Most of what's worked for me so far has come through trial-and-error experience. Now Chris Syme's expertise helps me understand why the best results come when, as I encourage others, we "make it our own" while also having a well-formulated plan. All five aspects of this SMART approach nurture two qualities essential to anything we want to do effectively: creativity and consistency. Like a companion who walks you through everything from starter basics to more complex activity, Syme helps you build confidence and choose wisely when it comes to social-media platforms and how you'll engage there in ways that make your work visible and inviting for your audience - and make the experience itself something you'll want to pursue. She also makes a case for the empowering process of understanding which media is most relevant, what sort of activity will work best there, and how to work in manageable increments and build on successes. Her ideas about how to organize and manage content are very helpful, as are the action steps that are like networking and brainstorming with others. The author is also building a collaborative, consultative approach on Facebook and other media that's aimed at applying the book's guidance in a culture of shared learning, a very creative source of support that's right in sync with the book's purpose.
